Matildas friendlies in Western Australia

Good for Bunbury to bring 10k. Some photos, likely the angle, shows its just a horrible view on a round oval. It's the same as a rectangular in that the ad boards are there but they're such an eyesore on an oval.
Bearing in mind that some of the AFL field markings from the North Melbourne v West Coast game a month ago were still on the field also during the Tillies game, but a good attendance for our first ever game in Bunbury nonetheless.

Pointless watching and reviewing that game if you expected a polished and finished Matildas side.

Montemurro obviously just trying out players to see who can step up and who brings what in a real game.

It is frustrating to see how much we lack vision and execution though. Panama were the more athletic and skilful seeming side with a fluid attack.

We struggled to get past the professional fouls and hackles and just could not get our heads into a cohesive system of play.

The first touch of several of our players is heinous. In positions all the way through the pitch we had players giving the ball away or wasting opportunities to build more with a 3 to 4 metre first touch.

If Montemurro wants to check out players suitable for the Matildas then why do it in a game where reputation is on the line.

Because that is what friendlies are actually for.
And reputations never mind rankings don’t matter.
Football Australia have built a huge following around the Matildas and every poor performance chips away at that.

Whose reputation? The manager or the team? Regardless supportersneed to understand this is what friendlies may dish up. The marketing is technically wrong. Entertainment shouldn't necessarily be expected but if you're into observing what it's building to then it can be enjoyable.

The squad has a lot of dust and rust and it's nice to see these news names and difference styles and once this window is over Montemurro will be able to get some clearer ideas going. 4 games in a short time is a great opportunity.

We still end up losing 8.34 ranking points after the loss to Panama though so our ranking may well decrease and we'll eventually end up in a lower pot for the 2027 Women's World Cup if things continue like this.

Didn't realise this match was on today.
Paramount only is something of an issue (it costs less than a pint) but I also felt the socials weren't as intensive. Maybe it was just my algorithm.

The game was free on YouTube outside Australia.

The fairly early kickoff also compared to our other friendlies may have played a part as well I think.

My point is that we complain when we get the same team playing every friendly with no eyes to the future.

We see maybe one new face in a game until we hit some sort of competition when we have players unavailable and we ask why players are being brought in with no previous experience and our cohesion is crap.

We get a new manager in and he wants to see how players perform in a game that does matter but is not a critical fixture.

I think we have to give him all the space he needs to rebuild this side and get them up to speed for the next competitive fixtures. It is not like he inherited a palace that only needs dusting and vacuuming.

In a rebuilding phase we have to expect some pain while it gets addressed. The question is, do people have faith and patience for Montemurro to do what we want in the longer run?

I am prepared to see some horrible games as we work towards something bright and shiny.

How often does England or the US national teams expose their reputation for a friendly?
They build their teams slowly and quietly.
The Matildas are a huge brand in this country and every game exposes them, so results are paramount.

I’d rather play a style of game that would slowly mould then into a good team than play crap football and get jammy results along the way.

For too long people can’t get their lenses over results (one of the problems within Oz football actually), but i’d rather build to do something in the future not get results are all costs because you won’t evolve if have a restricted style of play or mindset.

Joe is a good coach give him time.

How much time and patience was Tony Gustafson given? The media and pundits were on his back relentlessly, he took us to the Semi finals at the World Cup but as soon as a less than expected performance at the Olympics was achieved he was rubbish according to the ‘so called’ experts.
I hope Montemurro is given a better chance but somehow I doubt it.

We were sh*t let’s face it.

He may be a good coach at club level but international level is a whole new ball game.

What different styles? It was totally uncoordinated from start to finish. Too many Prima Donna’s trying to win the game all by themselves.

Thank you for pointing that. For those who say it’s only a friendly so it’s not important every game is important.
The Matildas brand has lifted Football Australia’s bottom line exponentially so to risk compromising that by trying to experiment is just foolish I think.
