Matildas friendlies in October 2025

Should be another win for the Matildas but bearing in mind that England will be looking to bounce back against us after losing 2-1 to 10-player Brazil in their first friendly this window.
I am surprised that we might be expecting a win against England.

I expected a tough game that we might draw or hold them to a small victory in - but would not have considered us going in as favourites.

I don't see us playing anywhere near well enough over the last few games to be considering us an effective team or dominant force yet.

Last time we faced England on their home turf we ended up getting a 2-0 win with Sam Kerr and Charli Grant scoring so recent form is on our side but I do agree that the Matildas haven't been able to capitalise on chances or maintain possession since Montemurro came in as head coach.

In true green and gold fashion, I am still thinking we will win even though my expectation is that we won't...but we will...

I am incapable of starting a game without thinking we can win it :)

Recent form? That match you referred to was in April 2023. Not sure how you can base expecting to win on that? It would be great if they can win, but you are looking at things with very rosy glasses if you expect the Matildas to beat England.
You are right, they haven’t been able to capitalise on chances or maintain possession since Montemurro came in. They were also unable to do this for a number of coaches before Montemurro either.
I do think though that, as RIMB said, they have been getting more cohesive since Montemurro came in, albeit still with the basic passing and control errors.

On the live stream she swung her foot, missed the ball but distracted the keeper and Nevin was credited with the goal.

The match report on myfootball.com.au says the same thing.

The commentators initially credited the goal to Kerr.
I was confused?

I thought I watched the replays of her scoring, but my wife read the match report and said she hadn’t scored.

Shoulda tried to play this at Wembley. Lots of Aussies in London plus a massive fixture between two of the world's best supported women's national teams.

Disagree here. The ladies should be easily beating a 32-ranked Wales. England will be a big test, they are missing a number of big players with injuries, but it could end up as an embarrassing scoreline for the Tillies.

I've just got to 45 mins in the replay.

I'm not sure how much time Montemurro has had with the Matildas on the training track, but in their 4-3-3 defensive midfield triangle formation with the ball against Wales, they kept the ball better against Wales' Full Pressing and intensive Squeezing - and -Gegenpressing. They struggled to do this in the Tony G era.

Sometimes it took a lot of work to play out in the Matilda build ups from the back to over the half way line, but when they did there was space to exploit either in between the Welsh defensive line and midfield line, or, behind the Welsh defensive line.

I don’t think we were bad at defending at all (in fact Wini got POTM as a defender). We just couldn’t score.

The Far Post Women – Monday October 27th (hosts: Anna Harrington, Samantha Lewis, Angela Christian-Wilkes).

I think the main reason why we couldn't score against Wales was because our midfield was put under pressure during the build-up, and defensively we were alright but definitely will be ruing some errors that were lucky not to have resulted in goals, but to be fair some refereeing calls also went against us which doesn't help either.

Starting XI for the Matildas in their last game of the October international window against the Lionesses has been named, with five changes made from the game against Wales. Mackenzie Arnold starts between the sticks, with Sam Kerr regaining the captain's armband.

And we're underway at Pride Park Stadium, Matildas being stifled by England early on.

Sweet Caroline as an in game chant should be punishable by ship to Australia but I wouldn't want them there either. Bloody horrible.

England already looking the better side compared to the Matildas eight minutes in with three shots at goal to our one.
