The Matildas have confirmed a two-match series against Mexico in New South Wales during the June international window, with games at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Saturday, June 6th and CommBank Stadium in Sydney on Tuesday, June 9th. The matches are the first for the Tillies on home soil since the Women's Asian Cup campaign in March.

Awesome, I’m booking tickets!!!

People in the comments of their Insta post were saying Spain. I guess it’s a Spanish-speaking country.

Tickets for the first match go on pre-sale from 12pm AEST Monday and from the same time on Friday, May 8th for the second game, with general sale not until 4pm AEST onwards on Wednesday, May 6th and Monday, May 11th for both matches respectively.

As much as I'd like for the Matildas to be playing world-class opposition like Spain the European sides still have their Women's World Cup qualifying campaigns during the June international window, and the friendlies against Mexico being confirmed now mean that both the Socceroos and Tillies will have matches against the same opposition in the space of a few days.

Yeah this is exactly why it wouldn’t have been Spain lol.

The Matildas have named a 24-player squad for their two-match friendly series against Mexico during the June international window. Ilona Melegh receives her first Matildas callup at senior level, whilst Alana Murphy returns to the playing list for the first time since June 2025. Ellie Carpenter and Caitlin Foord have also been named to the playing list and are in line to receive their 100th and 150th caps for the Tillies respectively over the course of the upcoming international window.

No Dani Galić, no Anna Razz. 😔

Ilona Melegh and Alana Murphy are interesting ones. Our goalkeeping options are quite limited at the moment so it makes sense but Teresa Morrissey has had the better season of the two. Alana is interesting because she plays in the WSL 2 but I’m fine with having her back. Looks like Izzy Gómez and Leticia McKenna are here to stay too.

I can’t believe we’ve only picked 24 players though and still no dual internationals. Either both teams are coincidentally both shit at dual international management or it’s a federation problem. Either that or our staff are Anglocentric and only watch the WSL. Unfortunately most fans are also Anglocentric and therefore these issues won’t get spoken about till I eventually get annoyed enough to email Football360.

Agree that Teresa Morrissey has had a remarkable season for Perth Glory this year which included being named in the PFA's A-League Women Team of the Season but Ilona Melegh would be more likely to make the playing list given that she already has international experience and ideally we need to start promoting from the Matildas farm system heading into the 2027 Women's World Cup cycle and beyond.

This can be the only reason. Our staff mustn’t watch enough actual games and just get notes from the youth teams, forcing them to do all the work for them. Very lazy and could potentially cost us if there’s a dud in our youth teams that doesn’t quite make it.

Many of our youth prospects like Shelby McMahon, Skye Halmarick and Willa Pearson already have heaps of potential and will be the most likely to be promoted from the Matildas farm system into the senior national team setup but agree that the personnel need to look at the age grade sides more closely and subsequently tailor the development pipeline so that the Tillies are ready to contend against the Asian powerhouse nations like Japan and North Korea who have more cohesive development systems compared to us.

There’s a point too where it becomes a diversity problem. I’ve always promoted picking players based on merit rather than based on unchangeable characteristics but only seven of these players come from non-Northern European backgrounds from my knowledge and only two have no Anglo-Celtic-Saxon ancestry (from what I know), which clearly doesn’t accurately represent modern Australia or especially the multicultural world of soccer. And that’s not because we have no talent in other ethnic backgrounds, it’s because we aren’t selecting them. I highly doubt that this is done deliberately but it does risk making us look like the “Arsenal of world football” (in reference to how Gooners criticise their team of blonde and brunette Europeans).

It woulda been amazing to have it as a double header!
It would have been good for the Matildas to be playing their friendly against Mexico as a double header at the Rose Bowl with the Socceroos but Football Australia would ideally want them to be playing on home soil again for the first time since the Women's Asian Cup because they already had the FIFA Series in Kenya during the April international window and the next time the Tillies are at home wouldn't be until the end of the year if that were the case.

Should have selected the Adelaide captain but then again he didnt like younger players when he was at Arsenal
Even though Ella Tonkin has international experience at age grade level the Matildas selection policy continues to prioritise the old guard over fringe players which means that unfortunately she has no chance of being selected any time soon.

Yeah, we really need to get in a coach who actually likes rotating and playing young players. Dario Vidošić should be the next man for the job. He's doing great things at Brighton and has brought in a bunch of talented players including two Arsenal loanees (Michelle Agyemang and Rosa Kafaji) and played them.
