Sign Up Now!yeah it could be the asian cup. Winning away from home for the first time is a realistic target and would be a great achievement. He'd never say that though hahaOur depth was increased under Arnold in a more orderly manner, though too many were retained for too long. Now we are picking players with a view to the Asian Cup. This is the main game. Not time to blood journeymen and kids that have bugger all professional game time. If you are a good enough you are old enough. But you need to be playing real football and proving it - not just hoping youth football is enough. You're, Bos and Irankunda have shown they are good enough. But when the people we pick in the central midfield don't demand the ball with the exception of Irvine and Balard I question the mentality of the selections. It's like throwing spaghetti against the wall and seeing what sticks. Okon, oneiill Teague and to some extent Brattan and caceres all have gone missing when needed. Is this by design?. Is this really how he wants to play.
I'm all for more depth but you need a plan that will win games that are measurably better than us and playing the way we are we will get thrashed by the better teams and be lucky to score against the lesser ones. We sit too deep, rely on the wings and our cm go missing.
Will have to check, but there’s probably something someone’s put togetherWould love to know the W/L ratio of Aussie versus international Socceroos managers, say since 1990. @NicCarBel
Is there any global data that compares the two, perhaps in world cups?
excluding short term ringins like bvm venerables and guus, have we had any long term foreign coaches apart from pim and holger? Will have to check, but there’s probably something someone’s put together
Don’t think so, unless we count Rale Rasic, perhaps? Will have to check - will probably give myself a project while I’m bored at work tomorrow lolexcluding short term ringins like bvm venerables and guus, have we had any long term foreign coaches apart from pim and holger?

Adopted, perhaps - but was he at the time?thought rasic was an aussie?
I guess he was an nsl coach. If a foreign coach coaches an a league club for years after a while I kind of see them as local (I think monty would be adopted too)Adopted, perhaps - but was he at the time?
Yeah might be something for me to note.I guess he was an nsl coach. If a foreign coach coaches an a league club for years after a while I kind of see them as local (I think monty would be adopted too)
Rudi Gutendorf, Joe Vlasitsexcluding short term ringins like bvm venerables and guus, have we had any long term foreign coaches apart from pim and holger?
Great work. One minor quibble - you're missing a 6 in the recurrent sequence of Scheinflug.Yeah might be something for me to note.
But, going back to the task at hand - lucky for us, Wikipedia already has the Socceroos manager/coach data at hand.
By win/loss percentage overall - and not counting Caretaker periods - Les Scheinflug is our most successful (66.66666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666% over a 12 game period) from 1981-1983)
As much as we see Venables as a short term ring in - given that was just 1997-1998 - he is actually our 10th longest serving (in terms of matches) manager, and next in line on the W/L percentage with 65.1% over 23 matches. It’s worth noting this includes the run to the final of the 1997 Confederations Cup.
Hiddink (61.5% over 13 matches) and Raul Blanco 60% from 5 matches) are next, and then we hit our next Aussie: Frank Farina with 58.6% over 58 matches
I think Popovic has the core group chosen. He's looking for depth and tactical options now.I suspect I’m in the minority here, but I actually don’t like the fact that Popovic has used so many players. We only have limited number of matches prior to the World Cup, and he had 8 matches with the team in qualifying so he should have then had a reasonable idea of the players he wanted. Sure, look at those who really deserve a chance (eg M Toure, Balard and maybe a small handful of others) but these games since qualifying also needed to be used to build combinations, teamwork, familiarity with each other, etc. And I don’t think this has really occurred with all the chopping and changing seen in the past 5 matches.
I thought he was too.thought rasic was an aussie?
One thing that interested me is pausing at the split second of a turnover when we are deep in a 541. In previous games i saw we actually saw players sometimes move to open a passing game a split second before we won the ball. This time i sometimes saw everyone stand for 3 seconds and not move. Since 4 V players eventually swarm in the counter press there was nothing they could doI'm up to the 19 min 20 sec mark of the Aus v Ven game.
Since the 10 min mark it has been awful from the Roos.
What has happened?
The game is being lost in the Transitions - Australia's Defensive and Attacking Transitions.
Aus too slow to support the Roo ball carrier in Attacking Transitions. At about 18 mins, Aus did reconfigure team shape quickly in an Attacking Transition, by quickly moving from a 5-4-1 to a flat midfield 3-4-3 though.
In the Defensive Transitions Aus are quicker to assume defensive shape when they lose the ball, than they are to proactively support the ball carrier in Attacking Transitions. However, in Aus Defensive Transitions, little Squeezing intensity is being applied to Ven, hence they can play on the ball easily in the defensive half, even in their attacking half, with Aussies rarely closing them down quickly.
Consequently, the Venezuelen Attacking Transition, often easily evolves into Ven Ball Possesson, whilst Aus's Attacking Transitions are often quickly turned over quickly back to Ven, before it becomesBall Possession for Aus.
Venezuela are just swarming at our ball carrier, often blocking Roo passing lanes. A few times O'N and Okon Jr, like most others, should have run towards the ball carrier, Geria in this specific case, showing for the ball more quickly and more proactively to prevent Ven closing down passing lanes.
It is just awful to watch!
I saw a session with CCM doing this with Phil Moss - moving towards the ball carrier quickly, to prevent opposition intercepts.
Moved here at age 27, and coached the Socceroos age 34-39, and played 10 years in Yugoslavia before coming here.I thought he was too.
I've interviewed him.
If u are an aussie citizen and the first coaching gig is australia id count it as an aussie coach, we are a multicultural countryMoved here at age 27, and coached the Socceroos age 34-39, and played 10 years in Yugoslavia before coming here.
I think we can certainly consider him Australian - but in the context of overseas influence, I think I’d count him as foreign. But I think that’s a really “on the line” decision
Jim Shoulder (1978 campaign) and Rudi Gutendorf (1982 campaign) spring to mind. If you look at people like Rale Rasic there were lots of others as well but all of those that I can think of were Australian residents before their appointment eg Frank Arok, Eddie Thompson etcDon’t think so, unless we count Rale Rasic, perhaps? Will have to check - will probably give myself a project while I’m bored at work tomorrow lol
Barring injuries I think he had about a dozen inked in, 6-7 more pencilled in and has cast a wide net looking for the rest of the WC squad with an eye also to the Asian Cup. What he hasn't really mixed up is different tactics, at least in matches. I suppose it's hard to do both at the same time with so many player swaps.I think Popovic has the core group chosen. He's looking for depth and tactical options now.
Uncle Joe really counts as Australian. He lived here at the time for nearly 20 years before being national team coach and did all his coaching here.Rudi Gutendorf, Joe Vlasits
