Sign Up Now!Well he definitely wasn't investing to be closer to silicon valley lol
Mata just invested in an MLS franchise, the APL would be terrified of what he would have to say....Strange question but
Has anyone actually interviewed mata and or Costa?it's occurred to me I haven't really seen them promoted at all
When you have young kids coming through that can do the same as a marquee on the field if not better on minimum wage why would any club want to fork out millions? I think having a marquee at clubs was just a phase the league was going through to bring in the crowds but it really didn't work except for Del Piero. And like Marquees I think the gen public went through a phase in going to the ALM now they have moved on and prefer watching Netflix. The A League is just a fad you go through in life no amount of hype will bring you back to it.Are the days of mega marquees in the A-League over? I think it was China that first put a dent in us, then MLS, now it's Saudi. There seems next to no chance of attracting a global star anymore.
Which star players out there now in a top four league, now entering the twilight of their career, would move straight to the A-League? I.e. the next Del Piero. Mata's been a success, a gun on and off the field and not actually on marquee wages, but he's not that top tier star that drags the masses through the gates (even though he probably should).
Del Piero was on $7 million over two seasons. I doubt a club today would cough up that much for a similar player, and wages have only gone up globally! I think we'd only be able to attract a very charitable type, just like Mata.
I'm much more content with players who are raring to go and not necessarily the biggest name. The league has had plenty of those such as the ones you've named above.Definitely room for guys like lolley Fraser Laurence etc
Clubs should target South east Asian players more and just be smart with their scouting
November 2024 isn’t really “just invested” is it now?Mata just invested in an MLS franchise, the APL would be terrified of what he would have to say....
Sheesh whats your problem? If you take a look at WHEN the comment was made you may realise that something posted in December 2024 is fairly recent if it happened the month before.....November 2024 isn’t really “just invested” is it now?
My apologies. I missed that. To be fair the font is very small and you wouldn’t expect someone to bring back their comment from December 2024. I’m sorry.Sheesh whats your problem? yes I agree there is always room drawing players above the average APL ones.......This thread is interesting reading given the season that Matta has had. Looking at Matta, he has seemed to have grown through the season. I thought he looked "old" early on and a bit off the mark, but he has certainly performed over the last half of the season. So a big hats off to him for getting his act together, and looking forward to seeing him again next year if he signs again. I suspect Diles deserves a lot of credit for changing that around, and the feelings seem mutually positive.
Having said all that, I have a soft spot for him, as a former Man United player, and I was chuffed to see the banter between current players and him over his scoring feats this year.
To the thread question, I believe that marquees are a valuable commodity to get bums on seats, and news items on the TV. The marketing of the concept and the individuals bought to the competition has been sadly lacking. As others have mentioned above, the competitive playing field with MLS, Saudi, and CSL also in the market means we have to be a lot smarter in selecting potential players and selling the advantages of the A League and Australia to them.
I think Berisha, Broich and Henrique were just journeymen that stumbled across the A league, decent players though.yes I agree there is always room drawing players above the average APL ones.......
It sparks the league and gains much needed press.
Mind you doesn't have to be ADP levels for he is the out and out best visited sadly with a sub standard SFC team of the times but over 48 games banged in 24goals and his play making was for all to see.
Mata I admire him greatly also but nothing to ADP's level imo and considered success rightly so in low league times for 1 season.
Pretty much failed at WSW so glad he turned up for MV.
No need for top 4 league nearing retirement types and there isn't the funding as we know.
Berisha/Broich/Henrique did they cost a bomb ?
BoBo/LeFondre's what did they cost ?
Ninko ?
SFC had that Polish player called Adrian - what a player no one knew of he came under the cap from memory - his skilset was tops !
IMO I'd like to see lesser known here but good players from Latin Merica - 2nd level portugese etc would UP the weekly standards.
They would be more skilled and get peoples eyes and compliment the locals.
Money is the problem, i would imagine.thats what I mean though Sutho.
No need for mega retiring players pluck out those like mentioned (sure a punt) but considering the euros/latinos play far more games and have the skills above the locals its a win win.
I can watch young players near on as good in NPL but at Pro I expect more.
There must be a motza of good players in latino world middle 20's would luv a aussie tenure for a couple of years and light up the league.
Sure especially better known ones but there must be value offerings in scouts data base’sMoney is the problem, i would imagine.
over 60 for sureSure especially better known ones but there must be value offerings in scouts data base’s
