I was surprised how interesting this Pod was? I was listening to it in heavy traffic. Then the journey ended prematurely.

Also, surprised how negatively a few G and G posters perceive Nick Stoll? Is envy at play? We need erudite young voices like him in the sporting media, advocating for football in general. NS is also positive and talks football up in general.

Grazor, some great points/question that you posed, mate. Nick didn't answer them that well sometimes, going off topic.

1. The point about NRL/union clubs having their best players stay with the clubs - not to be transferred, compared to AL clubs having them transferred post season, usually overseas. Then you alluding to Adelaide U as the most successful club - in the context of wherever they finish on the ladder, their crowds don't drop as much as some other clubs when they have bad seasons.
That there appears to be a phenomenon of more AU South Aus domestic players produced, and, it seems to be more of a South Aussie flavoured state club than some of the other AL franchises. Interesting point. Moreover, that is it more of a paradigm that other AL clubs should try and emulate? I think the Jets are ATM, but conversely the crowds decline markedly in Newcastle when their results are poor.

2. That smaller media units struggle to access current players and coaches, you raised as well. Then because of this, and the potential for positive stories to be aired publicly having obstacles, the perception of so much all the AL, and football in general, being negative in general media coverage in Aus.

To exemplify your point, I saw a brief excerpt on Stan, with Robbie Slater and Bozza to a lesser extent, going apoplectic, about Aus football, whilst a bemused Craig Foster and Adam Peacock looked a bit stunned.
For mine, the game has passed the Bulldog and Bozza by. They allude to so many GG players living overseas and coaching there. A new, younger gen of Socceroos, former pros, with greater humility, have replaced the GG in Aus, inculcated in different football methodology. Foster is part of it, recently taking on a Tech Dir job.

These guys rarely laud the Arnie coached ( Slater does, because Arnie is his good mate), Socceroos gaining 11th place in Qatar 2022 WC.

3. The Bozza point that you raised, Grazor, which we've discussed off forum, was in one AL game, Bozza stated the AL was like the EPL. Nick countered that Bozza changes his opinion very quickly at times, often positing an antithetical view an hour later.
Your point stands though. It impressed you as a new football convert. That the AL was often lauded in the past - creating a general perception that the AL and Aus football in general, was successful.
Fast forward to the present. Many views expressed in the general Legacy Media milieu in Aus, are negative about domestic football. Most celebrated is about Aus players doing well in Europe.

4. A point Nick S answered well, was he advanced that if the AL generated an average of 30 000 spectators per game, and it was making decent revenue, then promo and releg would inevitably follow, because the owners/moneymakers, would see access to making more money in an AL 2 and promo/releg. I think NS makes a compelling point.

I think the points he made about Barca were made in a relevant context to the questions asked. I agree with NS, that Jets are playing an exciting brand football, comparative to aspects of Barca in the past.

Oustanding questions/points made , Grazor. Really good, informative Podcast too.

As I say, one doesn't know what one doesn't know. Gee, I've learned a lot from the G and G Podcasts. Thanks for all the work you've done - and whomever else from G and G is involved.

We are very lucky to have these Podcasts on G and G.

I’ve finished the entire Nick Stoll Pod.

I think overall NS has been an excellent guest. I like the way he talks up negative perceptions of domestic Aus football by linking it as part of the entire world game of football. He notes highlights and positives instead of constant regurgitated negatives. I hadn’t heard of him before.

Another highlight of the G and G Pods in general is the range and diversity of guests that the G and G Pod team have enticed to appear. I surmise it has taken a lot of hard work to liaise and organise them to appear - at the same time.

I went and blew the dust off my Spotify account so I could listen to these more easily.

It was another really good listen. I think Popovic is likely to start Italiano and use Geria as back-up RWB at the World Cup. We didn't get to see too many players in the role and Italiano was the only guy who actually looked good. Geria was serviceable but far more comfortable at RCB. Karacic and Silvera were poor, Silvera is out injured and Karacic's Osijek are getting beat each week in Croatia.

Interestingly Strain hasn't gotten a look in under Popovic. Unless there is a bolter like Bennie (my wildly speculative pick) or someone like Adamson starts getting games, I think that's how it will go. Overy is too soon.

Good seeing G and G posters publicly appreciate some of our fellow forum members who do so much to provide so much content for this forum, LFC.

I even think of you when I hit the iron and listen to Podcasts. I know you watch your long suffering better half, iron, whilst you listen to G and G podcasts! I do both simultaneously!

Not sure whether to post this here, or in the Socceroo threads?

Recently I've compiled a lot of data on Aus players in the last 10 Socceroo matches. Then I stopped when Paramount inexplicably took the full replay of Aus v Colombia off air, and I was cut off after 55 mins exhaustive analysis. ATM I feel it is so boring, I can't face doing it again, but the reward is how much one learns.

In short all have struggled at Right Wing Back, or RB. Geraint Jones, Strain, Karacic are all way off the mark, unless any have made rapid recent improvement.

Atkinson - I'm biased, because I've coached him in groups, but I think should be more dominant in the AL, but I could argue the same about JS's poster boy, Behich, at Left back. Both have done well in the higher level ACL Elite comp though.

Bennie - too young, too skinny. Has talent in spades though.

Adamson - haven't seen recently.

The notable exceptions are:
* Miller - I know he is unpopular, but he is a rugged physical presence in this position and can hold his own and is improving. He is never beaten in 1v1 s over a whole game. Even the most rugged opposition LBs or wingers at best equal him over 90 mins. One of our best current Socceroos to ply his trade in Scotland, before heading to the English Champ. Some rugged opposition LBs have enjoyed throwing weight around whilst Miller is off the pitch, then after Miller comes on as a sub, it all changes. He also heads goals.

* Italiano - a big surprise. Watching him as an U23 Olyroo, I thought he had reached his full potential. He has improved in Europe and is a neater technician than Miller. Being a bit smaller, he can be bullied by hyper rugged opposition Left Backs more than Miller. Still a good 1v1 ball winner and has decent game sense and better technique on the ball than Miller. Italiiano is more nimble on his feet when jockeying, showing and delaying than Miller.

* Geria - thought he was the best player for the job originally, and was surprised Popa has not played him there more often? Even better in 1v1s than Miller. However, against the better teams we've played recently, Japan, Canada, USA, Ven and Colombia, they have closed him down on the ball and his technique has been exposed in less time and space. Also, a while back Grazor alerted me to his lack of ability to play long diagonal switch passes to break up opposition gegenpressing - which has been true over time.

* As a wing back, I think Metcalfe has the perfect skillset to excel as Right Wing Back. He wins a lot of 1v1s ( that take a long time to adjudicate a winner), and flies under the radar a bit, but has really good game sense, vision, a good athlete, and is a decent technician who has kicked on in Europe.

* Leckie - perfect for the role, but now too old.

* Rowles - has excelled defensively as Left Wing Back. Very good 1v1 ball winner, but I don't think he could offer much going forwards and crossing with his right foot into the pen box. He is quite two footed in passing though.
