Football 360

Have to say F360 is s very good football publication and has done some fantastic reportage since it started.

It's one of the best I've seen and by far the best when it comes to football in Australia and Australian players abroad.

I know it's probably none of my business but I cannot work out how they monetise the website.

These football writers don't work for free....

Picking up on the 3 Australian own goals is the type of live, real stuff that no other football media reported. We'd just get generic recycled info from one central source with a different headline yet the article containing all the same quotes and no editorial features.

Makes me wonder if and what the staff are paid in these initial days. Not trying to say there's anything dodgy there. You do wonder if someone like Simon Hill gladly did a favour to get it off the ground. All of the contributors have come from an industry already on shaky ground so I'm sure they are also doing other work to keep things stable. It's a highly unfortunate trend journalism has taken.

The site rightly and hopefully will get revenues coming in as it's the direction football media needs to go in Australia.

I used to be a paid subscriber to the Athletic. Initially it had a huge amount of English football output on it's British version. Something like 15-20 long form articles every day.

But it wasn't sustainable even with a paid subscription model. It was sold to the New York Times who then cut it's output even further.

I'm not aure why anyone would pay for snippets of news you can read for free on bbc football or another dozen or so similar websites...

Plus circumnavigating the Athletic paywall is easy! So on the odd occasions when they do actually release something worth reading I just bypass the paywall....

Code sports is subscription based and they have some enticing headlines. It's only natural they need to earn from their work. Amazing how initially newspaper sites were totally free and then the penny dropped that they'd have to start charging to make up for the shortfall of sales.

I really don't think there's much worth paying for at the majority of news outlets now with their own insular view on the world.

While sport sites can get exclusive interviews and write really unique stuff, you just need one subscriber to spread the content on social media then most people pick up what was said.

I remember The Athletic being alright in the early days but then the NYT sale they turned into this annoying 'we own sports reporting' type of place and I hated how much focus there was on only the biggest teams and names in the world not to mention numerous tie ins on other sites and podcasts.

I'm finding quite a few decently written football substacks lately.

None that are paid, just the basic free tier.

Kit Holdens 'Played in Germany', 'The Head Scout' and 'The Ligue 1 Story, are all particularly good....
