I'm not sure how the fuck they're going to do the intercontinental playoffs (as it is currently, the host confederation gets an extra spot in these playoffs - but with 3 confederations technically hosting, who gets it? My guess is Africa).

Plus we'll have US, Mexico and Canada actually in the qualifying round - while I doubt they get tripped up, probably means the usual contenders will be strong enough to qualify this time (Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama?)

I was bemoaning the lack of quality in AFC and referring to Asian Cup as the mickey mouse tournament. I have quite enjoyed the group stage here, though I was hoping for a more competitive showing by Asian teams.

Next world cup may have 64 teams, which would make the qualifiers pretty redundant. The only way I can see it working if if Europe gets most of the extra spots. Maybe 8 more for Europe, 3 more for Africa, 2 more for Asia (lol) and one each for the Americas and Oceania. We may see Vanuatu at the World Cup yet.
 
Austria is screwed no matter what happens. If they lose and finish third, they’re out. Win/draw and finish second, and they play Spain in the next round.

Algeria is sitting pretty in third. They need a draw and nothing else. As it stands, they play Switzerland, which is exponentially preferable to Spain.
 
I hate to be overly negative, but this 48-team group stage has been utterly boring (at least game three). So many matches have either been dead rubbers or dull draws where neither team has really pushed for the win.

FIFA either needs to expand to 64 teams or go back to the 32-team format.

Sorry for the negativity. Now, back to enjoying the World Cup.

From what I've understood, there's been quite a few games where if head-to-head wasn't the primary tie breaker, then things would have played out very differently on this final day. Example, Turkey could have finished 3rd with their victory over USA (assuming no draw in our match) and things like that.

64 is just ridiculous to be honest - but won't be in place for 2030: two confederations have already put through their qualification format

Last WC in Qatar, Asia was second best Fed after UEFA.

3 Asian teams progressed to last 16.
 
My heart breaks for Iran. Man If i was in their shoes watching this game......

Just got a taste of bile in my mouth and a pit in my stomach. Whatever that game was it just isn't in the spirit of the game. Rules must be changed so this scenario can not happen again.
