Interestingly the English probably have one of the worst diaspora fanbases out there. Like, compare it to all the fans of other European countries in their diaspora who see it as an easy choice for a second team cause it’s woven into their identity. Even among other Britons, people who’ve been in Australia for decades or even centuries still support Scotland or Wales at the Euros or when Australia aren’t playing. Many even support clubs from over there.
Then compare that to the English, who only seem to get support from English people who live in or were born in England and more recent migrants (e.g. English parents or grandparents). It’s the same in every country. In fact, people of English descent often fully engage in our major sporting rivalry with England. You never hear this with other groups, in fact there are even Kiwi Aussies and Aussie Kiwis (by birth or descent) who support both countries.
It’s truly quite fascinating and I’m curious why the English never developed a strong diaspora fanbase or tied supporting their country with immigrant identity, especially when the Irish, the Scottish and the Welsh did. So interestingly, while they won’t back them for obvious reasons, many if not most Aussie fans (including the ones with an English background, English culture and only speak English) would also not be supporting England.
Thats a really fancy way of saying "Wogs rule, skips pull" hahahahahahahaWhat's also interesting is the Australian of European descent undying hatred of England and English football culture....
And why they harbour a distinct "Anyone But England" sentiment.
It's not as if there's an actual bone fide rivalry between England and rhe Socceroos. They've played each other barely 10 times in friendly matches only.
It's quite a fascinating mix of historical baggage and modern-day "cultural cringe." Is it less about a genuine hatred of individual English people and more about a reaction against the perceived dominance and arrogance of English football within the Anglo-Australian sporting pysche?
Is it a cultural defence mechanism or just a normal everyday dislike of Anglo's?
Ive been around local Australian soccer for years and rarely witness this disdain. But on football forums it's quite different....
And yes, forums become that space where fans compete to prove who is the "most authentic" football intellectual.
And of course, I get it that the internet is an accelerant for performative identity too...

I just can't support an England squad with no Liverpool players.I know this lovely Italian Aussie guy. Runs a trattorria in Brisbane and absolutely disdainfully sneers at English football....
Yet him and his wife went and seen Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Adele, fucken Ed Sheeran....
Sometimes paying $300+ for a ticket!!
I always say he's got more of the English in you than he's willing to admit!!![]()
I don’t think it’s that deep, I think it’s just carried over from our rivalries in other sports (cricket, rugby, etc). What's also interesting is the Australian of European descent undying hatred of England and English football culture....

... and refused to leave the pitch, and sat on the reed carpet laid out for the Queen!!! Que hombre!!On the subject of Argentinean defensive midfielders and getting sent off I noticed the great Boca and seleccion midfielder Antonio Rattin passed away the other day....
For anyone who might not know Rattin was infamously sent off in the 1966 World Cup Q- F against England while captaining Argentina.
89 yesrs old.– Great innings!

More unbelievable is a Spain squad with more players from Tottenham than from Real MadridI just can't support an England squad with no Liverpool players.![]()

To be fair that’s not true anymore, since Marc Cucurella signed for Real Madrid during the tournament. Still, it is the first time in World Cup history that Spain haven’t selected any Blancos in the squad.More unbelievable is a Spain squad with more players from Tottenham than from Real Madrid
Pele walking into bar with friend, *noise and chaos* "Oh no, it's the English, let's get out of here"I think they should try Four-Four-Four... they may have a chance...![]()
