FIFA 2026 WC - US Dumb shit

It's ridiculous but most chalk boards just have England vs Ghana on it and that's enough. I'm sure wording can be easy enough so anyone who wants to promote will be able to.

As if football fans don't know where to seek out matches.

I'm actually quite surprised that World Cup as a wordmark on it's own is considered by FIFA as intellectual property - considering we have many a World Cup across multiple sports.

Can confirm this from the document that's referenced in that video - I went to take a look because the video only showed graphic elements, so I thought that just using "World Cup" without any other reference would work.

Wording from FIFA is - FIFA encourages businesses and the public to use generic football or country-related images and/or terminology that do not incorporate any FIFA intellectual property.

Which to me, the only hard bit to get around is 'World Cup' - I'm not sure it has the same exclusivity around it that it can be considered IP like 'Olympics' can I would have thought

Ridiculous American crap. Also clutters up the front of the jersey. I don't like it at all, but if it is going to be done it should have been a smaller patch on the sleeve.
They won't be happy until they get Austria, Belgian league style kits.

It's just not needed. If, and really if, the a minuscule patch on the sleeve.

The fact they are bending over and gaping for a sports merchandise company that doesn’t have their deal kick in until not even after this World Cup, but the next one even, to do something this fucking money hungry for this World Cup shouldn’t surprise us

You're worried about not having a patch download for the kits for your game are you? :D

Call me cynical but I just loathe parts about The Athletic, Barstool Sports and Fanatics. They actually do a good job with some things but they've gotten too influential with their stickers on a lunch box to try and sell stuff. Plenty of companies have sold a product without obvious greed. Here, the transaction feels imbalanced.

Craig Foster’s upset that football and politics aren’t as intertwined as he thought.

You know what, the only reason Donald Trump’s deporting his own citizens and invading other countries is because Curaçao’s third choice keeper Tyrick Bodak hasn’t said anything. See how fucking stupid that sounds?

??? So you are happy with US customs being able to effectively disadvantage 3/4 of the teams at the world cup because of who they do and dont give a VISA to?

I mean Foster is a goose, but he is NOT wrong here.

The problem with Craig Foster is he's just too much of a hardened on leftie....

It's all very good being an activist but when that activism is a one directional collectivist framing, with all the emphasis on systemic Australian/Western failings, and this one way solidarity with the marginalised that offers no nuances at all! Rigid ideological claptrap!

He frames sport as "inherently political," turning commentary into lectures on refugees, climate, and systemic racism. Many see this as unnecessary politicisation that alienates fans wanting escapism, not activism.

It's selective outrage combined with elitist performative activism....

As a football analyst I quite like him but find his power/oppression narratives somewhat grating

Craig, Russia and Qatar went ahead. 1,500 people died building Qatar's world cup, this was pointed out to them and to FIFA and neither of them gave a fuck. Russia is run by a literal dictator.

FIFA doesn't care about any of this stuff. The die was cast with Sepp who discovered that FIFA could make a dump truck full of money if they teamed up with the worst people in the world.

Of course not, but the players speaking about it really doesn’t do anything, nor does it do them any favours if that were to be the case. Trump isn’t gonna stop what he’s doing because a footballer from overseas spoke up. If anything he’d just make one of those long Truth Social or Twitter/X posts that he frequently does calling them some names.

True...

I think a lot of celebs are like this unfortunately. Look at all the celebs talking about Palestine (Cate Blanchett, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Angelina Jolie, Zara Larsson, Dua Lipa, Macklemore, Jenna Ortega, Pedro Pascal, Chapelle Roan, Mark Ruffalo, even The Weeknd, the list goes on). None of them have any connection to Palestine or know anything about it, so why haven’t they talked about, say, Assyria? Why aren’t they as vocal about Ukraine as they are about Palestine? Why prioritise talking about one issue over another? Same goes for the pro-Israeli celebs (though most of them are Jewish). This is why I admire those who take neutral stances or who actually put time and effort into their talking points and donations.

To his credit, he has spoken about other countries (China, Qatar, Russia, Saudi) but he’s been much less vocal than he has when it’s about Israel or the US. I wish he was equally vocal as I believe everyone should be held to account equally. Qatar and Russia were worse than the US and Saudi will be too. All three of those countries ban trans people from being trans and two of them (Qatar and Saudi) ban homosexuality (and Saudi has the death penalty for it).

To add another point, Russia literally annexed Crimea (part of Ukraine) in 2014 before the full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 (which led to the annexation of the Donbas despite the fact that Russia’s obviously losing this illegal war and genocide for numerous reasons). For all the terrible things he’s done, Donald Trump hasn’t actually claimed part of another country as his, but Vladimir Putin has.
