Hey, so just putting forward a random question while putting together the logos for the Unofficial Australian Club Database - I'm going through my 2020 logos for Victoria for cross-referencing and checking if I've missed anything.

So.. just want to ask the Victorians/Geelongians: Stead Park Lions? Who are they, and why do I have a logo for them in my 2020 folder, but don't have a record of them in 2024? Is this a club that's folded? I can't find a trace of them on Facebook or anything other than a few old junior leagues on the FFV-Geelong Game Day fixtures page. Only link I have is that Geelong Soccer Club's home ground non-sponsored name is Stead Park (and their logo is of a lion) - but I can't find anything in history saying that was the club's former name.

Sorry mate... I avoid Geelong like the plague :)

Geelong SC has been around for ages, currently VPL 2 (I think Paco that we played last night is playing them this weekend) never come accross Stead Park Lions though... sorry mate.
all good - I think I just found my answer here - looks like they are very much linked - may have just been a local, juniors only club linked directly to Geelong SC

Will be the same club just a local team. Same as Elcho Park Cardinals who is the community version of North Geelong Warriors. Similar examples in Melbourne exist although it is a lot rarer

Ah yes - that's another club I had a logo for too - thanks for that!

It's G-Towners not Geelongians fwiw 🤣

It seems the current acceptability level is at about 3,000. Could Geelong keep above that?
I think so but those attendances get criticised pretty heavily. I cant think of suitable stadium in Geelong at that size

Western United’s average attendance at GMHBA was 5,655. A new 5,000-capacity facility similar to Morshead Park, with seven or more pitches, is being planned at Armstrong Creek, which could work well. I would expect crowds to be higher than those at Macarthur and Western United.

Is there a train station there?

*just googled and found this, holy crap I have never heard of this Victoria Patriots bid! Another "boutique stadium" bid haha!

That's a great central location to capture Geelong, Bellarine and the Surf Coast - all going through huge growth. Although further away from where the traditionally stronger football areas are on the North side of Geelong. If the league is happy to have attendances around that 1-5 odd thousand mark that could work. I reckon they should focus more on that personally.

They mentioned boundary road and ghazepore road which don't intersect but would put it near Waurn Ponds station. Its more Mt Duneed then Armstrong Creek then, and further away from the Bellarine. But anyone in Geelong could easily drive to that - and near enough station for travelling fans. Near the uni too.

Is it actually going ahead though?

Same dodgy bid, same dodgy people, different block of land and corrupt council...

A basketball and gymnastics stadium is being planned for this location. Its placement is being debated, with some arguing it should be built in the south, where population growth is strongest, while clubs in the north of Geelong want the facility located there to support their expanding programs. The best locations available are either Hendy Street Reserve in Corio or Central Blvd in Armstrong Creek West.
