Expansion Thread 🪜

Thanks, yep the A - league needs urgent attention if it is to survive and thrive. I really do believe the obvious sustainable solution is to add 2 or 3 ole NSL clubs and it will unite the footballing tribes too.
Do you me financially sustainable solution?

What does playing at a ‘higher level’ give them in terms of a financial incentive?
Very little and apparently according to stefan symanzsky if money was the motivation for football every league in the world would be screwed including even the germans. Financial incentives would be even more dire in a pyramid (tho more sustainable) Its the ammenity value that drives football

The ammenity value of the a league includes playing in the only national comp that has access to asia and the club world cup

If Canberra joined the ALM would it just be Canberra United?
I assume that the Canberra A-League Men side would just be Canberra United unless the new ownership decides to go for a new team identity and the existing Canberra United women's team is superseded by the new team identity and subsequently rebrands.

Food for thought here, but the USA have a situation at the moment where they have just green lit the USL (United Soccer league) to have promotion/relegation. They have also been given "First division status" which means their top tier is classified as the highest level of football in the country. This competition runs parallel to the MLS, which is also "first division status". Most in the US football landscape think it is inevitable that the MLS and USL will merge in coming years.

Whats stopping the bigger NPL clubs from forming a league and lobbying Football Australia for the same status, which will force their hand in terms of merging with the A-league at some point in the near future?

Thanks for downloading this, what he writes is absolutely spot on especially his quote ‘the time for further procrastination is over’, unfortunately that’s all we do and have ever done.
Pleasure. Always in here reading up and figured why not share the odd piece i've compiled ere and there.

Surely the fa would be flexible on this if it isn't working
They are going to have to be flexible on many matters the way things are tracking. Football needs to unite and real quickly or there's troubles brewing in the not too distant future. We need more teams in the A-League and we need a 2nd div and connected pyramid throught to state NPL's

I’m not sure I understand which competition you want FA to merge with the A-league or why?

NBL launching a team on the Gold Coast

The National Basketball League is in “advanced” talks to create an expansion team for the Gold Coast.
NBL chief operating officer Vince Crivelli has confirmed the league is ready to create a new franchise in the city but only if it has the right infrastructure.
The Gold Coast City Council is eyeing the planned arena at Southport’s Carey Park as the future location of the proposed expansion team.
Mr Crivelli said “fan demand and commercial appetite” were strong enough in the region to justify a team but having an appropriate venue was “non-negotiable” and would put the Coast “at the front of the queue”.

“Expansion for the NBL is no longer a question of if, but when (and) the Gold Coast is firmly in that conversation,” he said.
“It’s a high-growth market, it has a strong sporting identity, and there has been genuine interest shown in the past.
“As a league, we’ve been very clear that any expansion must strengthen the competition, and the Gold Coast continues to present as a market with real potential, provided the right foundations are put in place.”
Early talks were held between the council and NBL in 2023 about the possibility of the city returning to the league for the first time since 2012, with councillors voting in late 2024 to seek a licence.

Mr Crivelli said “the direction of travel is clear” in terms of the NBL’s interest in expanding into the Gold Coast market
“We’ve moved beyond early-stage discussion and into a phase of advanced consultation around expansion,” he said.
“The NBL is able to expand, and markets that are prepared, in terms of venues, ownership and commercial backing, can move to the front of the queue.
“The opportunity is there for the Gold Coast to be part of that next phase if the momentum continues and it starts with urgent progress on venue outcomes, followed closely by attracting committed ownership groups with a long-term vision.”

The council launched an international expression of interest (EOI) campaign in August on the arena which ran until late November, with the push on to have the 12,000-seat project built by 2030.
It is expected to be fast-tracked for use as an Olympic and Paralympic Games venue in 2032.
Invest Gold Coast chief executive Mark Girard said a shortlist of two proponents would be given to council for consideration in the first quarter of 2026.
“It is exciting that the private sector is fully behind this project and ready to partner with us to deliver a world-class arena for the Gold Coast,’ he said.
“We will now rigorously assess each proposal for design vision, strong public value, capacity and capability as well as Olympic readiness.
“Our ambition is to deliver a world-class arena that attracts the biggest names in global sport and entertainment.”

NBL is miles in front of the A-league at the moment. Its not even a race.

Its match day experience is probably the best of any code in the nation.

In saying that, im surprised that it looks like they will go back to the Gold Coast as their next destination.
Not for everyone though I went to a nbl game hated the clapping and the music every second but if others like it good on them

That's an interesting point of view. On what basis do you reach the conclusion in your first sentence?

As to the last, it will be interesting to see if they can make it work. I don't buy the assumption that Gold Coast is a default sporting graveyard.

Yeah been to quite a few games myself. It's definitely an acquired taste as a match day experience. Like being at the circus when I was a kid.

You miserable old man, the match day experience at the ice hockey is first class and won't be matched in any Australian sport.
BTW, they also get told when to " hoot " at Australian sport as well. For the record, i do not participate in these things, but each to their own, as long as they are enjoying themselves.

Happy new year, old fella.

Yes HNY fellow ol mate…..
Yer nah no Mercian sports experience is anything natural but fabricated BS.
Tend to agree about it here for the general Aussie sports goer needs all the encouraging they need to break out of their conservative shells.

They actually don't do any of it at the Baseball, or the Gridiron for that matter.
