Probably yes if asia has 4.5 places. Even playing 5th placed south american team if we finish fifth is a lot more doable if u have a battle hardened team. Probably would make top four in asia from 92 onwards, not sure about before that

Didn't we lose to an Asian team Iran, in 1997, the 5th best team in Asia that year,

Yes but without 18 meaningful games leading up to that that we get through the current qualification system which battle hardens and allows combinations to form, particularly defensive combinations

You forgetting how hard it was for the SA to get their best players back for qualifiers.

Also forgetting how hard to qualify via Asia, with it's heat & travels, requiring strong infrastructure & battle harden coach

For example, the Asian 2007 cup campaign, we had a battle harden Golden Generation, we lost to teams that were more concerned on getting autographs of our players.

That heat and travel though in a funny way is what makes it easier, it battle hardens u

Even back in the 74 campaign jonny warren credited the battle hardening

The socceroos would probably not come back to play america samoa today, so i doubt that means they wouldnt have come for oman

Also having rankings based on 10 matches rather than 1 means u arent at the mercy of bad luck

True, but it’s all still determined by who’s better/luckier on the day. Plus we failed to qualify for Argentina ‘78 despite still having some of the WC squad from 4 years prior@ our disposal.

Now this would merit its own thread, but how many of us ever even semi-believed in “the witch-doctor’s curse” that was hexed on our Mexico ‘70 qualification campaign❓

There is no doubt the more matches gets you battle harden, I agree with you.
But look at the 2014 & 2018 campaigns, we only qualified by the skin of our teeth.
I still don't think under the NSL do we qualify, the infrastructure was poor, you dismiss the Asian qualification route as being easier than the Oceania, while I agree on match hardness, I disagree.
To qualify thru Asia, you need coaches like Guus, Pim, Ange, 2020 Arnie & Poppa & not Farina, 2007 Arnie & the likes & the SA does not have the infrastructure to get coaches like FFA (FA) does.

The NSL finished 21 years ago and the NST is only 1/2 a "season" deep.... Some of you old foggies need to stop living in the past and join the rest of us in 2025.
 
Wasnt a huge difference in performance from our 2001 team under Farina and Hiddink against Uruguay in 2005 respectively. We won both home legs 1-0 with the difference being that Schwarzer saved us in Montevideo in 05. We got lucky in a penalty shootout eventually but ultimately it was luck, in 2001 we had chances early in the 2nd leg to put Uruguay to bed but couldnt capitalise.

All things considered we should have gone have to Korea/Japan and absolutely should have gone to France 98.

thought the reffing was the main difference
should have conceded a pen and a red card in 2005 in both the home and away. Some times luck goes your way, sometimes not I guess
