"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

I went to Normanhurst Boys' in the 70s. It was, according to the sports master, very much a rugby school but over my six years it was swamped by a wave of footballers. By the end of my days rugby was barely played and we won the Tasman Cup (state knock out) two years running.

Interestingly, though we all played football for the school and on the weekend, we only played league (tackle, not touch) at recess, lunchtime etc. And very brutal it was.
 
In terms of ABC and SBS TV media, in Tasmania we are saturated with AFL. There is virtually no league coverage in Tas.

I've just been in FNQ for a month and league is the most prominent, but I was surprised that AFL still had second position? I assumed union would have far more media presence than AFL in Queensland?

Then since the Turkey win, football came to the fore in FNQ and even in Tas since I've returned. To their credit SBS and ABC have been keen to cover migrant/refugee Aussies - and - embrace diversity.

AFL must be smelling a brief fear until the WC finishes.

Still not as big as state of origin, and money coming into the game is laughable. Basically we get talked about a few times once every 4 years. Then it’s back to “who r u”.

Way behind league and AFL but...

These are the times we need to be leveraging the Socceroos to generate interest in the local game. I don't know what the angle is... maybe unearthing the next generation of Socceroos stars given we are a development league?
 
Those of us here at the start of the AL will remember Chad Gilbert and the first ever AL advert. It was pretty cool, given there was no AL history. Now we have 20+ years and could have an ad featuring the likes of Nestory, Bos, Herrington, Toure et al doing amazing things in Europe and for the Socceroos but also showing footage of when they were emerging in the AL.

Obviously I'm the converted, but I would find such an ad quite inspiring.

Well here’s the things, we have A-league players/former players at the World Cup but our ALM is on struggle street funding wise. Look at Netball is just coming off a $80m over 4 years tv deal and there next one is stated to be $160m for another 4 years. Netball can bring in good international players to the comp where as the ALM have to developed youth and bring in 3rd rate imports.
We can’t bring in more viewers or more interest on dole cheque squads. Robbie Slater said the new TV deal,is only around $18m a year and with that kind of funding there is no way u can build/promote the top league in Australia.
 
Everything can be fixed with money, there's no other way around it. Marketing, making it cheaper to play, linking with schools, etc

As an aside it's criminal what the Bakries have done in what should be one of our biggest markets, and again if the A-L or FA had money they would be able to put a stop to it.

If I were the FFA/APL I’d have stripped them of Roar’s license ages ago, on the grounds of dereliction. Same w/the CFG re. City, though in that case they’ve been really winding back their global-affiliate operations in general.

At the time I was of the opinion that the Vuck, Adelaide Utd and Glory moreso than Roar needed a token skip like him in their ranks to sell the A-Liga to the pro-AFL public. Archie Thompson did the trick for the Vuck largely bc ppl at the time mistook him for being First Nations.

I was @ Turra High - grew up Kisso Rd.
Shane Gould days, Murray Barnes played for Kisso then onto Roos '74.
Normo back then I never considered much of a sochka school, with Barker/Knox nearby very anglo and Union reigned supreme from my observations.
I noticed as years went on they finally had to introduce or accept sochka.

Hounddog, not sure of your background - the bastion private school ala Joeys northside of Syd for eg......
I ended up moving to the area above, whilst my 2 sochka playing boys played the local comps some mates were at Joeys, famous for Union fullback Matt Burke etc.....
They couldn't stifle the influence of sochka, it boomed 90's on, even to the point they employed Culina as the TD for his son went there.
Most of the private Union ol skools have all got sochka nowadays in the plenty.
My sons went to catho schools, they played for school in the ISA, it's a huge comp incl private schools that were once Union only, changed heaps, State winners then go into a National comp play off.
Your right - Mummy doesn't wish for Johnny running into polynesians nowadays, well most wouldn't, the like for like at same age is huge diff in body weight and structure.

The anglo grip has changed alot - if only our FA could structure the game accordingly finally, its got massive chance to end up being one of the BIG commercial codes here against those 2 eggball ones but for now they keep breathing easy.

Murray Barnes went to Normo.

I'm guessing you were three or four years ahead of me. I have quite a few friends who went to Turramurra.

Were you part of the Spirit crew when that took off in the 90s?

One of football's many false dawns but there were some great nights at North Sydney oval.

One of his Roo shirts signed framed at the clubhouse.

Yep was at many NthSpirit games from the get go, midway through a fellow team mate's company was a major sponsor back in the day, Snap Couriers- crownies were to be had a plenty in the members stand haha
Pre Percy Hotel steak n beverages was a must and it had a great vibe - pity it didn't last.
It conflicted with my APIA roots but local was local.
I knew the next guy (Tony Gelonesi< go figure another Italian) who bought Spirit wanted to re locate them to Brookvale before it ended up where it became today.
Now I put together your CCM backing and Lawrie haha
For who benefited from that false dawn eh taking players to the early days of CCM.
