"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

The world cup bid was probably one of the biggest errors for Lowy. Not the substance of the big (which was dreadful) but wasting time attempting it. It was never going to happen, he didn't pay off enough people, and they dropped the ball running the Aleague trying to win the bid.
I'm skeptical getting to host it would do what we want. People would be interested in the event. It would be 2000 Sydney Olympics level interest. But it would be one off. Eg what is the legacy of the WWC? Very little, interest in the Matilda's has waned and I expect it drop off further as this generation retires. When I talk about being mainstream, really I mean club football, local clubs and football culture being embedded in the culture. I don't see a lot of translation between the WC and club football. It seems like maintaining the current mainstream culture and just allowing a small football sugar hit (similar to EPL sides playing here) then back to the regularly scheduled codes.
great post

I had no idea that NRL had such massive licence fees! $360m for one bid and $100m for another five year bid. Insane.

From something I heard from a friend in Christchurch is that the use of the Stadium is problematic. They have over 140 events over the March - September each year.

V'landys wants Christchurch but the broadcasters want Logon or Ipswich.

Far more revenue to be made with a team based just out of Brisbane. Australian capital cities are where this is at. This is true for us as well. I suspect a second NZ team based out of Auckland has better prospects than a Christchurch side.

Yeah, Christchurch population only 400,000.

There was a big fuckaround on X from some wannabe journalist / dub fan getting the shits at FA for putting the Colombia game on what was going to originally be the AFLW grand final, and she copped it big time
First I hear of it. Link?

That being said, lemme take a guess who it was: Marnie Vinall?💡

I tried to find the original post. I think I found the original by some random who is apparently a real person but the original tweet was regulated on who could reply.

I've seen the rukus about Marnie Vinall and Richmond as well. I mean she comes chiming in making sport people are trying to enjoy political or cultural and then tries to hide behind 'journalism'. The abuse isn't right but she needs to realise people don't want every topic to become someone's personal crusade.

Yeah I think it's some random wannabe journo - but she has made her profile completely private now so you can't view

I suggest that this thread should be retired.
There is no threat to the Neanderthal codes. They are culturally entrenched.
So how about ditching this thread?

I believe the term is more an acknowledgement of when they do underhanded silly things off the back of football, or in relation to football's goings on at the time.

Eg, when euro clubs come and they commit a Sherrin violation, or releasing AFL fixtures during kick-off for an Australia World Cup knockout match.
