Best overseas leagues for Aussies?

Jason Davidson went from Hume City in 2009 to the youth setup at Pacos de Ferreira and impressed enough to get just a few appearances off the bench, iirc, for the senior team in the top division that same season. My memory is a bit hazy but I think he featured in a match against Benfica. He was loaned out to Sporting Covihla in the second tier the following season. Anthony Carter has played a fair bit in Portugal, mostly in the second tier including 2024-25 where he scored 15 goals for Alverca as they won promotion to Liga Portugal. He then transferred to Santa Clara in the top tier where he played a handful of matches before being loaned to Farense in the second division for the remainder of the season. Awer Mabil did have a full season in Liga Portugal when he went on loan to Pacos de Ferreira in 2017-18. However, they finished 17th and were relegated. He left at the of that season.

Brazil Serie B would be a good start, although realistic would be a Serie C team. Peru wouldn't be bad El Salvador with it's cleanup of the street shit wouldn't be a bad place either. Best balance would be Panama.

I will cop some flack for this yet some of the younger players coming through have parents with enough deniro, sheckles, moolah to subsidise their son's basic to comfortable lifestyle in South and Central America. Pay wouldn't necessarily be at the top of the agenda for them but learning the dark arts and manipulation would. Learning what jeering crowds (Colombian riots couple of days ago) can be like would also be good for the education and the mental toughness.

You would be amazed at how far 1K AUD per week will get you in Panama let alone El Salvador.

Aussies playing in El Salvador, my old homeland would def be something not on my bingo-card..

Keeping in mind that ES hasn’t had its own currency for 25+ years and uses the USD instead, it is nonetheless possible to eke out a good-enough living in the Primera Division if you’re good enough. That is of course if the club you’re at actually pays you on time, LOL

Having said that, depending on the quality of teammates around, I’d say it’s possible for even slightly-above/average ALM players to be borderline-superstars in the Primera Division there.

Astonishing that Serie A isn’t Big Five?

Except the Italian domestic players playing in it, have failed to qualify for 3 successive WCs.

Meanwhile the Spanish, French and English players playing in their domestic Big Five leagues reached last 4 in this WC and have consistently produced in recent times.

It would be interesting to compare the international performances of Serie A players playing international football and those in the English Champ?

Of course there will be few, if any, English players playing international football from the Champ, as most or all, will be playing EPL or other Big Five leagues.

I suspect seri a is older and transfermarkt has a bias towards younger players
 
Being that graph is $ value of the leagues possibly Championship worth more nowadays due to the $'s that filter down the English system incl $'s relegated Clubs bring with them.
The FA filter down more than 180M lbs for eg.
Just a thought.

Lots of overvalued or players on max-contracts like Osimhen at Galatasaray that really tips the scales here. Liga Portugal's biggest clubs tend to put insane buyout clauses on top of their young players as well. Saudi Pro League, well we know all about that.

I think player valuation tables is becoming less and less reliable with all the dodgy deals going on behind the scenes in the transfer market to work around financial fair play / PSR rules.

€140 mil for Diomande to RM is just another in a long line of shady deals.

Villupillay to Bundi 3
Natta to Serie B
Clayton Taylor to English League 1.

Given Melb V and Jets are playing ACL, NV is a worse club scenario and the two former Jets players, not as good.

Beau Bush on G and G Pod claimed Aus Players’ Assoc don’t want to see so many players going overseas and leaving AL. They see player retention for domestic league as a goal.

Why are these problem transfers? There is nothing wrong if these players want to go overseas to pursue their own goals after all it’s a global sport.

True.

It isn’t good for Socceroo prospects though. All three would probably have been in Socceroo calculations at the end of the AL season, and with Villupillay in the WC squad.

Erdevisie, Belgium, Portugal, Swiss, Denmark, Austria, J League, Saudi league, Norway, English Champ, MLS are recognised as better quality to play international football - if one isn’t going to play Big Five.

I would have thought Circati leaving Serie A to play with a big Portuguese club is going to a lower level league?

A few big games against the other big Lisbon. club, Porto and Braga in Portugal each season, plus some big Champ League or Europa League games, may be comparable to a Serie A season?

This is based on Circati being a Socceroo.

If a league wants people to watch them and compete in asia probably a good idea to try and keep some players
 
In the end transfers go where they find someone who wants them and wanting players to stay here is nice but you need a lot more money to make that work. Also need a lot more teams sorted into leagues, otherwise a strong a league means a weak socceroos
