Best Ever Performances in a Socceroos Shirt

this will sound like an odd choice, but harry kewell v france at home in a friendly around 2001ish

most impressive performance in a roo shirt Ive seen
I put it in my opening post.. was an outstanding performance. Was MOM against the World champions. Our best ever player at the peak of his powers.

I don't think I had ever seen an Australian player come on and take a game by throat like he did against Japan before. The sheer self-confidence and capacity to come off the bench and do what he did in an absolute cauldron atmosphere. It was almost as if he smashed the tall-poppy glass ceiling Australian players tended to impose on themselves.

That performance by Bos got me thinking, what are the greatest performances ever in a socceroos shirt.. here are ones that come to my mind ..

Zelic v Netherlands 92. 2 goals, qualified Olyroos for olympics off his own boot.

Slater v Argentina 93. Our best player easily over the 2 legs. Maradonna praised his performances afterwards, abd secured a move to the premier league off the back of tgese games.

Kewell vs Uruguay 97. Confeds cup Semi final. Tore them all game before scoring one of best roos goals ever cutting in from right side and firing from outside the box ..

Lazaridis vs Iran 97. Absolutely destroyed their rm and rb taking them on with ease sending cross after cross into our box only for Aurelio vidmar and to lesser degree viduka to squander.

Kewell v france 01. Friendly at the G. Kewell was at absolute peak of his powers around this time as a world star and it showed. Farina played him as both an SS and as a LW. Dominated in both roles in 1-1 draw.

Kewell and Lazaridis v England 03. Classy goal from Kewell, Ferdinand had issues with his pace and power. Played in an SS role dropping off Viduka to receive the ball, either firing long shots or running at the defenders. Lazaridis absolutely destroyed Beckham this game constantly running past him.

Kewell v Uruguay 05. Gus made a statement by not starting him but after Popa collected an early yellow card gus reshuffled putting kewell in early amd he repaid big time constantly running at his man, drawing fouls. Never saw him track bacl that much either. Clinical pen.

Timmy v Japan 06. Gus pulled same trick as above, timmy came in at 0-1 down and rest is history. For me his 2nd goal of this game is the greatest roos goal and moment ever.

Kruse vs Bahrain 2013. Pre ACL Kruse was a standout in an otherwise poor qualifying campaign, his best game was a hattrick of assists against Bahrain. Les Murray said in the post match that hed not seen a player that good for the roos off the ball, since Frank Farina.

Luongo v Sth Korea 2015. First goal of the game and oh what a classy goal it was. Was quality rest of the game also as we won our first and only major trophy. Nominated for BalonDor and looked to have world at his feet. Sadly didnt eventuate after a couple of underwhelming moves to hoofball clubs and competition from mooy and rogic.

Troisi v Chile 2017. Last game of confeds cup, ended up drawing 2-2 with a highly fancied Chile side. Troisi received the official Fifa MOM, scoring a quality goal and troubling chiles defenders throughout. One of our most underrated players imo

Souttar v Tunisia 2022. Crunching tackle after crunching tackle. One man wrecking ball and sprayed ball around too. Got a move to leicester in prem despite being out injured entire season before in championship.

Below stands out.

Good point. Him and Irankunda seem to have the same mindset/arrogance as many of the golden gen players like Kewell, Timmy and Neill especially, in that whoever they play they believe they are better than.

Honourable mention to Sainsbury against France 2018. Griezmann is his pocket and brilliant display.
Mooy was absolutely awesome that day and was the BBC's MOTM - ruled the MF against the might of France. His first half tackle on Griezmann was absolutely brutal and happened about 15 metres from where I was sitting.

I'm trying to think of some under the radar ones that haven't been mentioned

I seem to recall McKay in the 2011 Asian Cup semi for some reason.
Cahill would be on the list multiple times I would think - but now thinking about what I just wrote, that's likely not an overall performance, but getting us out of jail.

I'm going to go out on a limb and mention another performance that falls under the radar to me. Leckie against Netherlands in 2014 WC.

McKay was outstanding that tournament. Was the semi where he sent a long ball for Kewell to score?
