Ultimately Brisbane needs a new/upgraded circular stadium anyway in the next few years, which would be billions of dollars in itself (but most likely not as many billions as the Olympic stadium and other stuff needed). Without the Olympics, it’s possible that may have been the upgrade of the Gabba, but upgrading the Gabba specifically for the Olympics required the loss of a primary school, a public park (Raymond Park, incidentally the home ground of Kangaroo Point Rivers FC) and the resumption of a number of residential houses to build the athletics warmup track, which would have been a white elephant after the Olympics, so this was an unpalatable option as well.

Yes we can agree to disagree, but in my view a stadium at Victoria Park is the least worst option now that Brisbane has the Olympics in 2032.

For me, nobody needs a stadium.....unless of course it's purely for football :)

I also notice I meant to write 'I'm not defending labor'

An expert has warned Australians are going backwards financially on a per-person basis despite economic growth remaining positive, as new figures reveal a steep downturn.

Australia’s economy grew by just 0.3 per cent in the March quarter, a sharp slowdown from the 0.9 per cent recorded in the previous three months.

An online comedian has doubled down on defending a widely-criticised video that has been reported by broadcaster SBS for being racist.

Lisa Jane Spencer posted the video, in which she appears to portray a white woman choosing to “identify” as an Indigenous Australian, to Instagram yesterday.

The culture 'wars' will rot your brain.

Good post....

Whoever thought that the Gabba cricket ground would have suited an Olympic Stadium with all it's required and associated infrastructure must have been a touch deluded...

The initial thinking was pragmatic on paper. Taking an existing major venue in a central-ish location (with good rail access coming), avoid building a completely new stadium from scratch, and create a lasting legacy precinct for cricket, AFL and entertainment.

The only major concern with Victoria Park is they've not quite locked in a rail station.

building a major Olympic stadium in the modern era without strong direct rail access is pretty unusual and risky. Most recent Olympic main stadiums (think London 2012 Stratford with its massive rail/bus hub, Paris 2024's Stade de France with excellent metro/RER links, or even Tokyo) prioritised heavy rail integration for moving 60k+ crowds efficiently!

Brisbane has talked up the new Exhibition Station but is over 1km away!!

Id hazard a guess that that most major sporting stadiums built in the last 50 years almost have always prioritised some sort of proper rail integration.

The original Gabba plan had its own issues, but ditching it for this without fixing the rail gap just amplifies the skepticism. Feels like planning by press release rather than hard transport realities.

Don't forget the intermediate plan to replace the temporary stands at QEII stadium with brand new temporary stands, although that one had a pretty short lifespan.

Not much in the way of railway links in that vicinity either...

Just a 'busway'...

If you're asking international tourists to come to Australia for an Olympic Games and aren't providing world class rail links then you're setting yourself up for failure, or at the very least, some very unhappy international visitors.

I wouldn't be surprised if for the Victoria Park venue we'll see a doubling down of bus transportation....

"She'll be right, mate......"

I saw the SBS logo and couldn't think it was real. It wasn't. In saying that I wouldn't put it past SBS to do such things as their own warped comedy satire anyway and John Safran did things like knocking on local's doors trying to claim indigenous land rights with indigenous people in tow.

The Indian version is a real reflection on how some people carry on.

Remember The Chaser when they went to the Polish club dressed as brownshirts and Hitler? It was the same type of people on the audience finding it hilarious who today would shriek at anything remotely similar. They became so insular that their bubble started to make no sense.

Yes, it seems pretty distasteful today. Perhaps back then too. I guess weren't bombarded with faux outrage every day to care much about it.

Dunno how old mate linked some video to why we need “truth-telling”.

Labor’s still lying about abortion laws. They’re really clutching at straws.

I thought it was gutless at the election that QLDs LNP party wouldn't answer questions relating to their personal views on abortion. It was that party line from the video. Many who were elected including Crisafulli have voted against abortion laws in the past. When you have no senate and political will can shift quickly that's important to know. Legislation can get passed very quickly in QLD compared to other States.

Some people on the Circlejerk Australia subreddit thought it was legit. That’s the sub where all the One Nation voters hang out.

David Crisafulli said it wasn’t part of his plan and then said he thinks women should choose. Labor still attacked the LNP on it, but they didn’t change the laws.

I must say though, Ariana Doolan’s a terrific MP and a future Premier. Pumicestone are lucky to have her.

They haven't yet. Crisafulli has voted against abortion laws in the past. Why did he do that if he thinks woman should have choice. I think that speaks to his true feelings. Those comments are political pragmatism not his values.

Because people’s views change and it would be electoral suicide to make abortion illegal? Being personally against it also doesn’t mean you want it to be illegal.

That's exactly what it means. It was a conscience vote and Crisafulli voted against abortion rights. You're correct it would be electoral suicide.

It's completely fair to question him and the LNP on this because it's an important issue and his track record, and that of the LNP in QLD, speaks volumes and is not good.

As I mentioned earlier, QLD is more vulnerable to changes in political whims because we have no senate. The only thing keeping the LNP accountable on this issue is the knowledge they'd never win the next election if they did it. That fills me with no confidence.

It doesn't mean that. You can be against the idea of abortion but also not want it to be illegal.

I think they’d rather govern than push a viewpoint that some members hold. And most Queenslanders currently like their government as opinion polls show, so why would they wanna make it so people don’t like them?
