Australian news and politics.

Sky News must be spitting chips after Trump praised Albo and we came away with multi billion deals for critical minerals.

They'll fixate on Trump saying he doesn't like Rudd though.
hehe what goes around comes around re Krudd,
I lol'd
When Albanese pointed out the former Labor leader sitting across from Trump at the cabinet table, Trump asked Rudd if he "said bad", to which Rudd replied, "before I took this position, Mr President".
"I don't like you either and I probably never will," Trump replied.

Andrew Clennell is supposed to be a serious journalist - not a Sky after Dark lackey, but he was the one that asked the Rudd question. What was the point - so that he could get a viral moment about Rudd. I was watching CNN while it was happening and it seemed quite a bit staged. Then the American commentators said that Rudd was largely responsible with working both sides of the critical minerals deal over the past few months and he is sure that Trump was involved as well. So that really confirms that the question was expected.

Careful editing followed by Susan Ley calling for Rudd's dumping

They also do not report the exchange between Donald Trump and Kevin Rudd, where Trump said, "Joke. All is forgiven,".

The city of Melbourne is the sick man of Australia these days.

All that Yarra River water they drink labelled as VB has rotted their brain cells.

A lot of Melbournians don't even drink VB, they prefer that Melbourne Bitter Rubbish

My above point still stands.

Melbourne is the sick man of Australia.

All that Yarra River water they call beer has rotted their brain cells.

Lol at the cops sooking about over stretched resources, yet the new commissioner borrowed a police chopper to fly to tasmania. FMD

The one thing about Trump is that he does forgive indiscretions against him. Well in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, JD Vance was a bitter critic of Donald Trump. Publicly, he called the Republican businessman an "idiot" and said he was "reprehensible." Privately, he compared him to Adolf Hitler....

I reckon comparing someone to Adolf Hitler is much worse than calling someone a "village idiot".

So what did Trump do about Vance?

Picked him as his running mate in 2023 for the 2024 campaign.

The thing about KRudd is he might come across as being a little bit poltically toxic, even within the ALP at times and his demeanour might have an occasional touch arrogance, but when it comes to hob-nobbing around places like Washington, the UN in NY, London, Brussels and places like that he's quite the smooth operator....

His contact book is unrivalled in Australian terms.

Albanese knows this and that's why he's in situ as Australia's highest profile international diplomat.

And Sussan Ley is a complete idiot for trying to provoke the situation.

It won't get her anywhere. She's absolutely useless as an opposition leader. She should have acknowledged the trade deal. Anyone can see that the Australians have gotten a good deal here. Much better than most of the rest of the world. Probably only the UK has been able to sweeten Trump up as much!

It's all theatre. An 8.5 billion rare earths mineral deal would have sorted months before these peacocks strutted for the cameras.

That's how it works, you don't let idiot political leaders negotiate this stuff. Just let them sign the documents. It's all they're good for.
That's the point Rudd was intimately involved in the deal and I suspect Trump knew this and they expected some idiot to ask the question. So Rudd took one for the team.

They must have written this through gritted teeth

Albanese has taken a lot of risks with Trump but has prevailed. Consider the list: refusing any significant boost to defence spending, attacking Trump’s tariffs, turning against Israel, recognising a Palestinian state and pledging an expansion of economic ties with China. Moreover, while officials in the Pentagon had deep concerns about AUKUS, Trump has given it the presidential imprimatur.

He's done well when you consider all this

Exactly.

Also what a lot of people dont realise about Kevin Rudd is he's the quintessential internationalist and probably one of the most significant diplomats in the world right now.

He's also a senior advisor for the London based Chatham House which is a world-leading policy institute and think-tank used by governments, NGO's and corporations around the world.

His bio is hugely impressive.

HE The Hon Dr Kevin Rudd AC is Australia’s ambassador to the United States of America, taking up his posting in Washington in March 2023.

Ambassador Rudd served as Australia’s 26th prime minister from 2007 to 2010, then as minister for foreign affairs, before a second term as prime minister in 2013. He was member for Griffith in the Australian Parliament from 1998 to 2013.

Since leaving government, Ambassador Rudd has resided in the United States where he is recognized as a leading analyst of China. In 2015, he became inaugural president of the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York. In 2020, he was appointed president and CEO of the Asia Society globally and, in 2022, he founded the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Centre for China Analysis.

In 2019, Ambassador Rudd was appointed a companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to indigenous reconciliation, innovative economic initiatives, and major policy reform, and through senior advisory roles with international organizations.

Ambassador Rudd holds honorary positions at the Atlantic Council and Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC; the Asia Society, Schwartzman Scholars and Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New York; the Paulson Institute in Chicago; the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po in Paris, France; the Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation in Hamburg, Germany; and Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra.

He is founder and co-chair of an Australian charity, the National Apology Foundation, and a trustee of the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York City.

Ambassador Rudd started his diplomatic career in 1981 with postings to Beijing and Stockholm. In 1988, he was appointed chief of staff to the Hon Wayne Goss and served him as Premier of Queensland. He was director-general of the Cabinet Office in Queensland from 1991 to 1995, and senior China consultant for KPMG from 1996 to 1998.

Ambassador Rudd graduated with honours in Asian Studies from the Australian National University and received his PhD from Oxford University in 2022. He also studied at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei.

I actually think he get's a lot of unneccessary flack from people here in Australia, not just from the LNP but the general political establishment and many in the political media. He's hugely respected on the world stage. But like him or not I honestly couldn't think of anyone else who is better qualified or has more experience in terms of international affairs that Kevin Rudd.

On today's episode of 'Clutching At Straws', Sussan Ley.

Sussan Ley's attack on Anthony Albanese for wearing a Joy Division T-shirt has divided the Coalition, with some Liberal MPs privately questioning their leader's judgement.

Several Nationals members have publicly disagreed with Ms Ley's criticism of the prime minister, while her detractors inside the Liberal party room argued it was a "troubling" sign of her leadership style.

Ms Ley on Tuesday used a speech in parliament to accuse Mr Albanese of "displaying the wrong values" by wearing a shirt depicting the album cover of Unknown Pleasures by acclaimed post-punk band Joy Division.
