Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

Volpato's love is Italy. Not the World Cup. Not the Socceroos. Gotta respect it. He'll only consider Australia once every last hope of representing Italy has fizzled out. But I'm not so sure that we'll lower ourselves to that if it happens many years from now.

He knows what he's doing and what he wants. I hope he lives his dream without regrets.

it does sound a little better in the interview to be honest. I suspect we are his 2nd choice tho
Perceptions are interesting. I watched the interview and my read was playing football for Australia is a distant second to Italy. That's no commentary on his feelings for the Australia or anything like that. Just where he wants to play football. I'll get behind him if the unlikely happens and he plays for us at the World Cup, but I reckon it's too late now.

2006 world cup? Mate you were 2 years old still shitting yourself I doubt you even knew what a soccer ball was.

We get it mate, Italy could win another world cup one day but not with guys like Volpato and thats no disrespect to him he has forged a good career in Italy so far. But the Serie A has fallen a long way the last decade.

We are all pretty dumb as young 18 yo's so I dont knock him for his attitude, he wants to be the best but you are 22 now mate... potential will only get you so far.

He said posters from 2006 world cup.

I hope some of these dual nationals play for us and we aren't just helping Italy and Greece finally qualify for world cups
Yeah exactly, that's why I really think we need to cap all these boys for the youth teams.

On the other hand, just a random alternate history scenario: if Josip Šimunić, politics aside, played for the Socceroos, how much would've he benefited us? He played 105 games for Croatia but our squad back then was incredible.

Probably not much but losing Christian Vieri surely was a hit

Even if we give them youth caps there's no guarantee that they'll progress to the senior team though because they may still want to change allegiance later down the line, but ideally by calling them up for the age grade sides we would have them eventually commit to playing for Australia.

big upgrade on craig moore?

We seem to struggling more to convince dual nationals than the 90s

The big money of Europe has grown exponentially. You get discounted if you play in Australia. Would Dukes be recognised now or be consigned to League 2

a 189cm striker with good technique that scored nearly a goal a game as a u19?

I suspect if u19 aka 2007 born striker like Mehmeti got the golden boot scoring nearly a goal a game he would get 26 games for a club as good as zagreb next season?

To be honest I think we just haven't produced the same calibre of youth despite things being better lately. The might be exceptions, irankunda hit benchmarks in the domestic league earlier than Emerton, Kruse or leckie so maybe he peaks at a decent level

I was gonna say we did well with James Overy (kept capping him for Australia so he chose the Socceroos over Scotland). Hopefully he breaks into Man U's first team even if it's just for one game.

really curious how far away he is. He looks like he could be a league level at minimum and I wonder if a loan could help him. If you leave game time too long it can make you decline

He only turned 18 less than six weeks ago and he's already training with ManU first team so I don't think any time is being wasted.

I'd like to think he would already be passed A-league level in many ways, and it's simply the fact he's basically still a child that is the difference.

I think a loan would be helpful for Overy but you have to be careful because if he ends up not getting game time whilst loaned out then there's the risk of his development stagnating or even regressing, and it may well be more detrimental for him.

Completely agree, but I think at this stage everything is going along swimmingly.
He's fresh 18 and in and around an EPL first team squad and getting regular u21s minutes so traversing the correct path...at this stage anyway.
