mind you, say he does say yes and plays dam well after a few caps are you gonna give a toss he has sat on the fence no matter how long.
IMO IDGAF nor blame/judge him - how many other players wround the world have done so.
We got what we got - and I'd welcome him open arms compared to some we have sorry to say.

If he eventually decides to commit to Australia and puts the effort in and plays well enough he would be welcome. If he wanted to play for us in the WC the time to commit was about a year ago. If he wants to play Asian Cup the time to commit is now. If he wants to wait until the next world cup cycle then he has a year or so to make up his mind.

Alex M - a couple of years back I thought he would have had no hope making a Azzurri selection, though the way they have gone backwards the last 5/8yrs he actually may have a miracle chance good luck to him but again - I really do not care as others do judging him and besides when is it ever the right timing the scenario's you mention.
As far as I'm concerned he's a better player on his feet than many we've got - welcome welcome if ever it occurs, if not ce la vie.

If a player is 10 out of 10 in their enthusiasm for 2 countries then absolutely no worries

I personally didn't get that impression from the interview due to the way he said it was always his dream to play for italy but he is tempted to play for italy

In the end this is one of those things I trust Poppa on. So not fussed, I'll still provide osaussie updates but probably won't watch any of his games since he doesn't sound too interested

Feel bad for football360, if he said something like "It's been my dream to play for both countries, the socceroos have so many special memories for me and I grew up idolizing that 2006 team" I probably watch the whole video. At the moment, I don't care. Good luck to him, but if he ever came around (doesn't seem likely) would need him to show passion for the shirt

yep, aligns with his actions. Clearly his preference is to play for Italy but may choose Oz if this doesn’t happen.

One revelation from this all is that despite the tough talk from Poppa about only choosing players who want to play for Oz. It’s interesting that Volpato got a call recently from Okon about his interest in playing for us. Clearly feelers are being put out there to dual internationals.
I think it's really positive that Popovic is checking in and keeping doors open.

I agree but it's too late for this World Cup now.

“It’s always been tempting. It’s always been on the back of my mind throughout every day.

If you aren’t fully committed to playing for the country you were born and raised in, fuck off then. Not interested in capping players who only want to play for us because the country they actually want to play for don’t want to pick them
Maybe listen to the whole interview. He's always wanted to play for Italy because his Dad & Nanna were massive fans. He said that he appreciates the contact from the Socceroos, but at the moment just wants to concentrate on his club football. I reckon that will change in March when he gets picked for the Squad

That proves that he’s not fully committed and is using us as a backup. About time we show some self-respect and stop begging him to play for us.

Plenty of others who would jump at the chance to play for Australia

No way is it too late. You pick the best, in form players at the time of selection - if he's starting, scoring goals & assisting at that time, he definitely gets selected. There's a lot of club football to be played before Popovic picks his final squad

Yeah plenty of others would, but most of the options we have that play in his position aren't anywhere near as talented as he is, so I would absolutely pick him for the next window

Volpato made himself unavailable for qualifiers. He just clarified he dreams of playing for Italy and was tepid about the same for Australia. There are two friendlies and 6 months before the World Cup. I think he's done his dash for this World Cup now. I wouldn't close the door on playing for Australia but not this World Cup.

Mate, sorry he didn't actually, he said that he always dreamed of playing for Italy, because his Dad & Nanna were massive Italy fans. He said he was tempted to play for us & he thinks about it every day - that to me doesn't sound like he's committed to playing for Italy.

It's exactly what Volpato said. He also said the Socceroos were in the back of his mind. That didn't sound too enthusiastic to me.

it does sound a little better in the interview to be honest. I suspect we are his 2nd choice tho

I was not keen to listen having read the article. I'm glad I just did though. He seems very level headed. Obviously his family means a lot to him. But that is split between Italy and Australia. Like you I suspect we are second choice but in reality he has a lot of competition for the Italian team, not only the incumbents but fringe players that he is likely behind.

I would like him to play for Australia but his preference is showing. March will be interesting. If (maybe 10-15%) chance for Italy if he absolutely stars for his club then he only needs to get on the pitch to lock him in. Conversely, if we pick him and he turns up then even if he played in both games it still doesn't lock him in.

Can we live without him - absolutely. Would I pick him for the World Cup - no. Too many people worked too hard to get us there.

The complicating factor is that Italy will have Nations League fixtures in September but our first competitive match after the World Cup will be in the 2027 Asian Cup.

At the end of the day he will pick a country and TBH I won't begrudge him either way. He seems genuinely torn but very ambitious.
