I see your point but I was implying that she would partially fit her definition of “white coloniser”. It also frustrates me that she thinks all Indigenous people agree with her, when realistically they all have different views, and the Indigenous people I’ve spoken to have not held her views.

Similarly, Pauline Hanson calls herself “100% Australian”, which is true (as immigrants and their descendants can absolutely be Aussies), but her DNA test shows she is actually 59% Northern European, 32% Southern European and 9% Middle Eastern.
That assumes she perceives identity the same way you do. That's for her and her community.

This stuffs important. It was the basis for policy that allowed children to be taken from families because they were a percentage non-indigenous.

In that context you can understand why its insensitive to say that. It gets weaponised to say you aren't who you are. And has been used historically to tear families, communities and cultures apart.

I am curious what the benefits of patriotism are. For me, regardless of my political views trying not to be patriotic is like trying not to be attracted to women, so i might as well enjoy my patriotism and try and avoid the negatives that can come from it
You could also be attracted to men, not my thing though. But it’s perfectly okay.

Just make it you can only play for the country you're born in and end all the nonsense
FIFA should actually review the requests instead of just blindly approving everyone. Josh Sotirio to New Caledonia should be okay, but Adrian Segečić to Croatia should not be.

Segecic qualifies for Croatia the same way I would for England had I been a player, via grandparents.

I wouldn't have wanted to play for England if one paid me.

I would never have played for Hungary or England. Depends how you're brought up. Not bad if a place of heritage is part of your life but if there is a certain pitting against their other then no wonder the confusion. You get it with Turkish kids being told not to listen to their German teacher all the time. The German welfare office is awesome however. Listen to the money.

My grandfather never returned to England after his parents emigrated to Australia with him and his older brother when they were both kids.

The bloke was an Aussie through and through, even served in WWII with the RAAF.

Might be time for FIFA to start clamping down on this. Tie the national team status to their passport. If you switch you lose that passport. Plenty of countries around the world where you can't be a dual citizen and own multiple passports.

Once you tell these boys if you switch there's no free path back to a-league you will have to play on a visa things will change pretty quickly.

This is a big point too. Morocco and Turkey are heavily recruiting diaspora, but many (not all, but many) of those could’ve played for the countries they were born and raised in. Achraf Hakimi for example was born and raised in Madrid and is regarded as one of the best right backs in the world, yet he’s only ever played for Morocco. He played for their under-20s, their under-23s, their Olympic team and now captains their senior national team. Of course, Spain don’t care that they lost him as they have a huge pool of players to pick from and even players that will never get picked for Spain yet are still good players. But nevertheless if he puts his country first and his ethnicity second, he could’ve easily played for Spain.

It hurts worse the worse the country is. Spain has a bigger population and is better at football than Australia, so when Australia loses players. Unfortunately, this is more common here (as an average footballing nation with a lot of immigrants) than many other countries. For losses from those we would be one of the most hurt in the world, since while some are good ideas (players who can’t make each squad, e.g. Josh Sotirio and Stacey Papadopoulos), many are bad (e.g. Adrian Segečić and Nektarios Triantis).

I’m fine with them playing for youth teams but if he turns out to be a baller and could make the Socceroos squad then we can’t let Wales take him.

I hope the people switching, regardless of the nation, actually speak their language well. I’m of the opinion that we should learn a second language at school since everyone else around the world learns English (as it’s the global language) and sometimes also another language (e.g most Dutch are trilingual in Dutch first, English second and usually German third; almost all Dutch people speak the first two). However, I would emphasise that even more if you’re gonna play for that country. Language loss sucks too. So I hope Laura Hughes, Joe Lacey and anyone else who wants to play for Wales actually learn Welsh.

What about EU passports or dual passport holders? E.g. relatively recently Mathilde Janzen (who played for Kristianstad then and now plays for Hammarby) was born in Germany and raised and developed in Sweden; she then played for Germany as a youth international before switching to Sweden and will now play for them. Both Germany and Sweden are EU members and thus she has an EU passport.

Only in the last 25 years, or in the last year in Germany's case have you been allowed to be dual citizen. Probably why she was allowed lol

I could play for France and Italy but wouldn’t. I nearly coulda played for New Caledonia if I didn’t leave due to the 2020–21 riots.

Need to cap him before Cuba comes knocking. Fucking Popa.

Side note. What an absurd system that allows this rubbish.
If America’s relations with Cuba weren’t fucking horrible I’m sure half of Cuba’s team would be from Miami lol (35% of Miami-Dade County is Cuban, 25.2% were born in Cub, 68.7% is Hispanic/Latino and 66.5% speak Spanish at home).
