I think scicluna is the only player with good ball winning and progressive passing anywhere? (Apart from triantis :( )
Balard, Nisbet and Max Burgess. (plus Triantis and Scicluna)

Balard and Cameron Burgess with their vertical balls are the two that will unleash out speedsters as well. You take out Cameron Burgess with injury or you don't pick the speedsters and we are toothless.

Sadly none of those are good at ball winning

PlayerTackles+Intercepts per 90
Balard3.12
Nisbet3.24
Burgess3.37
Sciluna5.73

Devlin qualifies at 6,87 but isn't good at progressing the ball (and is anyway injured)

Ethan Alagich: 2.70 tackles per 90 and 0.79 intercepts per 90.

He’s been one of the best midfielders in the comp for the last 18 months but because he plays for a team outside of Victoria or NSW, doesn’t get spoken about nearly as much.

Someone has to do it at WSW :)

Yeah @scout_aussie s theory is the dilemma poppa is facing is
- you have to start irvine
- irvine is a weak ball winner and poor at progressing the bal
- in order to avoid haramball u need a partner who can win possession more often and progress the ball better

So unfortunately as long as we have to play irvine a lot of good players dont suit the team. Love alagich and curious what his ceiling is!

Certainly should be in the conversation above many others.

This would rule out Robertson in this type of role correct? A quick glance suggests Scicluna, Oneill, Okon and Luongo might fit this type?

This is only a problem because Popovic has decided to adopt a 2 man central midfield pairing; if he was more tactically flexible this conundrum could easily be avoided.

Solution go with a 4-3-3.

That might mean needing a different coach haha

To be fair a back 3 has become common in tactics and you think of our best xi, 3 of those are surely circati souttar and burgess

But indeed you dont have as much pressure matching profiles if you have 3 in the midfield

Not oniell, okon is close but his ball winning dropped over christmas, robbo indeed doesnt hit that profile

Luongo wouldve been perfect. For all i know poppa had luongo/irvine in front of circati burgess and souttar in mind when implementing this system

True, ive often commented that poppa has implemented a club football strategy at international level which could work, i guess we see

You are behind the times Popovic. It makes me so angry how out of touch he is and what it will cost us.

I wish he wasnt behind the times and we lived in a time where dual national roos would face a hundred setbacks, pay for their own tickets, get dropped for their clubs for flying and not even have regular wcs to dangle as an incentive and still choose australia

There were a few things from the Popovic interview I found interesting.

On Balard I got the distinct impression he was letting Balard miss so he can focus on NACs relegation battle. Fair play there.

He spoke about Suto being an option to play in Juric's role, which I took to be the 9. That's interesting if I didn't misinterpret that. Suto doesn't play there at club level. But is big bodied. Popovic did say he was looking at which of his wide forwards might play there, so maybe that's the answer.

What are Robertson's numbers? He's defensively good but plays more advanced. I think you could easily play him more defensively and you'd find that player.
