No, I’m gutted about our (and particularly Popovic’s) inability to have even a modicum of forethought and just cap him. I’ve made posts to this effect multiple times. I’m not sure what relevance that has to your extremely strange comment about Australia thinking it’s a “football powerhouse”. What aspect of any of this sad saga caused you to draw that conclusion is beyond me.

Seems a bit weird to jump ship to Croatia given he has virtually no chance of ever getting a senior cap with them

Sarcasm doesn’t always translate that well online big fella, particularly when it’s coming from someone with the Eurosnob moniker “Barca4life” denigrating the Australian national team. Forgive my confusion.

Will be interesting if he does indeed play in this U21 Championship, and then doesn't go on to play for the senior side. Now that I properly understand the ramifications of the change of association exceptions, just playing U21's locks him to Croatia forever now - so missing out on senior football for them will be quite something, when he probably couldawouldashoulda walked into the Australian line up.

The rules are bullshit if all you need to do is sign a form then play an underage game. If underage games count in that scenario there should be something the other way. All of Segecics previous underage games for us don't count but one for Croatia will because he signs his life away. It's balls.

It's to make sure players know that changing nations is a big thing, and to stop players changing their minds all the time (like we used to see in Rugby League circa late 2010's)

Underage games count in the sense of setting the initial nationality.

Correct Nic. He plays for their U21's in any Competition, Official or Non-Official, he's locked away forever to Croatia.

He can play only Friendlies for them - Underage or Senior, it doesn't matter because Friendlies have no effect on anything - if he wants to retain the right to try to reverse his change to Croatia at some future time.
 
The dual international diaspora conundrum seems to be growing in football but at the same time there is a backlash happening regarding awarding citizenship to diaspora also occurring.

Countries are making it harder for diaspora to automatically be eligible for citizenship, as far right parties come to power across the world. Italy’s court ruling today one example.

100% agree. It’s ridiculous that a youth friendly counts but not countless amounts of youth caps and call-ups for us.
