Australian Dual Nationals 🇦🇺🏳️

He is unable to reverse the Change of Association if he plays even one second for Croatia in a match in an Official or Non-Official Competition
Will he get a starting or a bench spot for Croatia though? @Beretta Is he really in a position that he can break into the first team anyway or as I imagine there are players in front of him. I can't imagine Croatia being short on quality.

Two Australian born and raised footballers, who played numerous games for our underaged teams and stated they wanted to play for Australia, turn up to one camp with Poppa and nope out.
FFFFFFS!
to lose one highly talented youngster is careless, to lose three is disastrous.
it points to a clear systemic deficiency in FA's oversight and/or popas man management skills.
perhaps those 3 will never become world beaters, but we dont have the depth to be able to lose players of that potential.

Now they’re free from the Aussie injury curse they’re probably gonna soar. I’ts a good thing Circati was locked up before Poopa got the job.

They were both good enough and they should have been playing. If available Triantis should be a starter and Segecic an impact sub imo. Popovic fucked them around and undervalued them.
Correct and he needs to be sacked.

It's all well and good to say he got us to the World Cup, qualifying for World Cups shouldn't be the benchmark anymore.

He's completely fucked around the next generation and we're going to be paying for it in years to come.

I think the Croatia approach was more aggressive than Popovic holding out and that's what has led to the sway. It's a combination of complacency and being offered something potentially guaranteed.

Popovic's management here couldn't persuade Segecic to be patient. It's also a bad reflection of him despite selection being warranted.

We shouldn't even be having these discussions as there were ample opportunities to get him playing albeit maybe not tied down. It feels worse because he actually came into camps.

When Popa said he’s isn’t trying to sell the shirt but then goes to Italy to try and convince Volpato to play for us? Something tells me they are selling us a smokescreen instead.
I mean that isn't what happened according to Popa. He said Volpato reached out to Okon and said he would be interested in a discussion about playing for Australia. That was enough for Popa and Okon to go to Italy to have discussion about their plans and what would need to be done for him to play for Aus. They didn't try to convince as much as accepted the offer from Volpato and told him it's his choice.

Segecic is a loss but not a big loss. For me, Skoko and Pavlesic are bigger losses to Croatia. Segecic was a bolter for this World Cup squad but I was doubting he would make it, which I think he knew which is why he decided to switch. He's a strong player when he is in-form.

I was assuming he makes the World Cup - who replaces him in the 26?
Potentially good news for Milianovic or an Eli Adams. Popa has been hyping up Hrustic alongside McGree as our only natural 10s. I figure Popa will try Hrustic on the wing again

Confirm it's nonsense but you've got people saying on social media Segecic would've been locked up with two friendly matches. A lot of odd misinformation out there. Surely that can't be right?

Popovic will be asked what happened and he'll respond with not being the type to chase anyone (except Volpato of course) and then say he picks people who warrant selection (except for Al Hassan, D'Agostino and Grant in a window where 3 right backs were picked).

I think Segecic was unavailable for some windows but there was plenty of opportunity to get him played in friendlies and be part of the squad. At the same time the idea of switching was planted in his head by Croatia and there was no stopping it.

It's not.

We need a clear and aggressive strategy from Football Australia on our dual nationals and a technical director to oversee it. It's too much to expect from the coaches who's focus is necessarily short term and who's approach will change from coach to coach. The federation has been caught napping and we got scooped. Only ourselves to blame.

The timing of this decision just prior to World Cup is so interesting. It'd be less surprising if he made the decision immediately after Popa announced his WC squad if he wasn't chosen. To make the decision now suggests he was pretty aggrieved and perhaps thought he was no chance to be picked, having likely been made aware that he wouldn't feature in the upcoming friendlies. Given he's surely unlikely to be in Croatia's WC squad, I wonder why he has made the decision now 3 months out from WC. It's similar to Triantis where he actually wanted to be a Socceroo and Popovic's actions have led to him turning his back. If it were a different manager, I would say that it is very likely that one or both are already cap-tied Socceroos by now.
Bring back Arnie lol, in all seriousness though I don’t think Arnie would have played around when capping these guys unlike Popa tbh.

No way he would have. I think that was one of Arnold's strengths. I think Arnolds man management is far superior to Popovic's.

This is seriously disappointing, especially when he said he wanted to play for Australia for now this to happen means something has gone wrong behind scenes.

Supporting Australian football can be really hard…
Perhaps he was just bullshitting when he said he wanted to play for Australia.

THIS!

I feel that the dual nationality fuck ups will be Popovic's legacy.

I also hope we have a poor World Cup and he gets sacked...even though I will be barracking for us every minute of this World Cup as always.

It's not.
Exactly. Too much misinformation and this weird belief that a friendly can set you straight which may only be possible if the person has switched nationalities.

If he can't get into socceroos how will he get into Croatia's squad lol.

This world cup alone we will take,

Modric - AC Milan
Sucic - Inter Milan
Kovacic - Man City
Baturina - Como
Pasalic - Atalanta
Vlasic - Torino
Sucic - Real Sociadad
Perisic - PSV

Maybe they see potential in him for the future however I'd find it hard for him to crack that midfield anytime soon.
