Australian Championship campaign ideas!

It ended with despair, concluding that Australia is too racist to have a nst and p&r. He seems to have left the game

it reminded me of the white liberal in the usa who "deconstructs" the history of their country or denomination and become so cynical and negative about their country they, if anything, hurt any chance of change

In Gorman's case though, the academic quality and talent for story telling more than make up for that flaw and make it an incredible book. It is a very unflattering look at the a league revolution and the xenophobic motivations of it!
The anecdotes are just the right balance of humorous and heartbreaking, too; there was certainly a lot in that regard that I was unaware of before reading it upon its release.

My favourite one was about how all the italians celebrated the wc win in 06 and said the pen was fair, had their patriotism questioned, then the local hospital in the italian area had a mysterious baby boom and they tried to figure out what the happy event was that caused it....They counted back 9 months before the baby boom and found the date was november 16 2005

Unfortunately along with the trad clubs and under the guise of progress went many of the most passionate advocates of the game, leaving the field open for the proponents of change to push the agenda forward unhindered.
The old soccer guard did seem to be filled with evangelists for the game, that seems to have largely vanished

In religious language, those most passionate about the game are more likely to be prophets calling for reform than evangelists looking for converts

More like 2 happy events preceding each birth🤣

When the broncos won the nrl this year someone on reddit said his wife was going to "take one for the team" in celebration

Didnt know whether to feel bad for him or his missus
Talk about bucking for the Broncs🤣

Anyway, one of the anecdotes from the book that had me ROFLing was when Brendan Schwab and Fozzie went to Soccer Australia’s offices during the 2000-01? NSL season to talk about staging friendlies to fill the gaps left in the season schedule by Carlton SC’s recent dissolution; the receptionist or whoever was tending to them took about 20+ minutes writing up the pre-existing schedule on a sheet of paper bc they didn’t have any copies already printed out…to which Foz turned to Schwab like “Mate this is over”

Mind you it was the world cup which did it, not hiding the greeks italians and croatians as fsr as i know :D

And all the power in the world to you for it👍🏼🙌🏼

It’s the rest that can’t be gotten through to and frankly we should just accept that for what it is, but the FFA/APL nevertheless persist w/sucking up to them..
Yeah anyone that wont come if a club is associated with migrants is in the same league probably isnt passionate enough to stay when the going gets tough anyway

I think the way to get more people into the game is for governing bodies to buy fields for grassroots clubs so the participation numbers can build. If we did that for the last century we have 6 million playing the sport and all the benefits that come from that

Oh, definitely.

The point is we’ve now had a fully-pro, de-ethnicised(the Roar’s 🇳🇱 roots and 2 teams from 🇳🇿 notwithstanding) national ⚽️ league for 20 years..that is still overwhelmingly ignored by the majority of 🇦🇺 society. As I pointed out then, when Mata signed w/the Vuck a few weeks back, literally no mainstream media in Melb reported it - zip, zilch and nada. SEN Radio and its social-media feeds saw fit to talk about some pleb getting de-listed from the Adelaide Crows(not even one of the VIC AFL sides) instead…

Looking back the only time i remember mainstream interest is
1) olympics
2) attacking players doing well in the epl. I first heard of kewell on btn!
3) world cups (duh!)
4) youth team going deep at a world cup
5) matildas
6) npl side making a deep oz cup run

Its true the domestic comp wont be a part of that, might never be....but its probably as much mainstream exposure as cricket gets

7) BucketGate and other instances of unruly behaviour that, when they occur at AFL matches, conveniently get swept under the rug or excused

Now I don’t know how many others have suggested this but I can’t help but feel that the blatant NSWcentric-ness of 🇦🇺⚽️, in this day&age, is probably more of a liability than a benefit to the game in this country’s overall well-being..💡

What I mean by that is that bc traditionally the state’s always been the game’s stronghold here and most of the iconic players/coaches have come from there, but more importantly the ADMINISTRATORS..and those ppl have never givenAF about the game’s struggles elsewhere in the country, even now, bc they’re too cozy in their Sydney-centric bubble.

I’ve been of the belief for years that ideally the FFA should be run by someone from the AFL states because ultimately they know what’s actually up w/regards to the overall state of the game in 🇦🇺. In saying that, let’s not have any more Ben Buckley types from AFL either - I’m talking dyed-in-wool ⚽️ people, unapologetically so and willing to make the hard decisions as they arise.

Yes you would, but let’s be honest, who really watches SBS? They only have a very, very small audience at the best of times. From what I have seen , all the games are either on their app or the secondary channel, Viceland.
Only ONE game (the first) is on Viceland, the others are on SBS "proper" or SBS streaming (on demand)... and the people watching SBS are its intended audience, Australians with a cultural background NOT from the anglosphere -- and those that don't mind a bit of wog soft porn.... .

You really don't like the Anglo's, do you?

though BA81 - it wouldn't matter where the FA was based the same outlook would prevail later as well - what Admin HQ isn't in their own bubble no matter where ?
I see what you mean for eg based in Melb so as the FA have a closer finger on the pulse/goss with AFL BUT IF they worked closely with their fellow State Feds they should be keeping close tabs with them about any possible intel that is valuable to work against or make good use of no ?
The other question would be have the FA cared what the State Feds report much ? do they react ? do they have good relationships ?

No diff to any National company HQ, keep your State Reps/admin close on the pulse so you also have good control.
Maybe thats the main prob with FA now and in the past (excl AL/APL)......

Agree no non Football background person should be at our games helm - can work elsewhere like in EU for its been forever established and nowadays run like a business model from the backroom but not here whilst we still can't get our shit together.
We need a strong person - I thought JJ was and still baffling why he left ?

yer nah cricket gets more mainstream than sockha Graz.
Yes, cricket generally receives more exposure than Australian soccer, particularly in terms of media coverage and overall popularity, though soccer has high participation rates. Cricket benefits from a more established national sporting identity, particularly with the A-League struggling to build consistent fan engagement compared to the bigger codes like AFL,NRL cricket, and rugby.

Note the "more established sporting identity" mention - I tend to agree.
Put aside us devoted football supporters the mainstream only jump on board at WC's/Matildas/youth team only just but nothing like the 2 mentioned, EPL because of pre post and back Ange, we have no attacking players in the epl, Oz Cup a blip in the big picture.

This is Oz football as we know it 20+ yrs down the path of ethnic clensing - many have been pushed away many form the game - if it was scarred during NSL its doubly scared into the modern age for we wouldn't be talkign about this otherwise.

Christ mate, give it up...

No, you need to give it up, why did you need to include " Anglosphere "?

As they say in the classics, " Practice what you preach ".

As in all your debates, you see everything as your way or fuck off.
