Australia u20 qualify for the world cup

Taking some time to understand the draw ranking point system based on the past 5 tournaments. Australia having won the Asian Cup got 5 bonus points and have some left over from 4 versions ago. They currently provisionally the second highest in pot 3 so I assume that would be enough to remain there.

4 CAF teams are to come via their tournament. Nigeria, Senegal and Mali have more than Australia while recent entrants RSA, Tunisia and Gambia don't and won't. Hang on, Mali haven't even made the AFCON this time. Otherwise Guinea, Ghana and Zambia with the latter two having a good tournament a few times ago but it may not be enough.

If I understand it, Australia should be in pot 3.


Note: Congo were suspended on 6 February 2025 due to government interference in FECOFOOT operations. Congo was not included in the draw, and will be replaced by a yet to be determined representative from UNIFAC. This will likely be one of the UNIFAC semi-final losers: Central African Republic or Cameroon.
 
Looking at potential pots. I'd take Italy, NZ, Australia, Paraguay.

have to earn our way back to the top. Will take making it 3 out of 4 times or something before we are back to where we were

I considered that too. NZ are alright at youth level and are in a higher pot due to regular qualification as are USA and SK.

From pot 1 it's about who we may be able to get a draw with. Perhaps Italy. USA are tricky and Brazil are Brazil. Perhaps Brazil and they can clean up the rest of the group.

If we name our absolute top squad then I'll gladly play anyone.

Ahhh interesting.

As long as there is no BS like with the U23s where eligible players are left out of both squads.
 
Interesting to note the 4th AFC round is scheduled for October and will overlap with the U20 WC. I just hope we have qualified by then as I don't want a tug of war with Irankunda. I'd rather he play at the U20 WC and then we have a nice and easy October friendly window or even a rest.
 
I see Jason Kodor at 1,95cm is eligible for this tournament. He's played for Romania too. An enquiry would be worth it. 3 goals in mostly bench cameos this season for Lecce. Certainly wouldn't mind his height.

There seems to be conflicting info about whether Kodor is eligible for Australia. There was definitely a media (Roar or FTBL?) article that stated he wasn't eligible despite his dual citizenship and being born here.

Crazy when you see the England U21 squad.

They didn't qualify for the U19 Euros which were the qualifier for the U20 WC. Seems U19 is the age for a Euro tournament then they naturally progress to a potential U20 WC.

England didn't qualify out of a group with Austria, Wales and Montenegro.

Anyway I have an update on Noah's Australian citizenship.

Article 5 of FIFA's Eligibility Regulations states that any player who holds a permanent nationality that is not dependant on residence is eligible to play for that country's representative teams.
Because Noah already has the Citizenship certificate, passport in hand he is legally viewed as a full Australian citizen.Football Australia does not need to apply for any special exceptions or prove "Grandparent links" to FIFA.He can be called up tommorrow as a domestic citizen.

The issue is if football Australia understands that I already went through the steps to secure his legal citizenship and passport about 4 years ago.

But the main issue is Noah was in a bottleneck of talent at Eintracht Frankfurt and had a difficult past two years to get game time.
So he has indeed transferred to Darmstadt 98 and has been training there these past few weeks.
They have their first preseason game this weekend against Wehen Wiesbaden.
The Darmstadt 98 U19 are in a difficult group in the Youth league this coming season.
They have
  • 1. FC Köln
  • 1. FSV Mainz 05
  • 1. FC Kaiserslautern
  • SC Fortuna Köln
  • SV Wehen Wiesbaden
  • FSV Frankfurt
    Noah has to get his game minutes up and do well this season if he is to be considered for any National team.First he has to secure the starting position.
Another interesting piece of information is there is an other Australian/English player called Finely Wells who is a 17 year old Left Winger in the same team.

Oh by the way I have posted two new films of Noah on his Youtube page.
One is a compilation of footage from U15 to U17.I think there's a couple U14 saves.
The second one shows Noah training with his Eintracht U17 team and also shows him warming up for two games if your interested. Just search for his name.

After reading about Balogun’s eligibility for the US surely he would be a possibility considering he was born here. Others will know more than me.

I would have thought so but those that know the rules better than me have suggested otherwise.

I'd be interested in @jrvkfootball take on the Vescan-Kodor scenario if he's still lurking.

Kodor just moved from Italy to a Romanian team this transfer window.

Great to hear!

I think this was the similar conclusion I reached back when we used to discuss on 442 - so I'm surprised it took so long for the powers that be to reach that conclusion.

Hi @Quicky.

From what I can gleam online, the player:
  • has a parent born in Australia
  • was born on 9 January 2006 (so has not yet turned 21 years old)
  • has played in an official competition (FIFA or UEFA) for Romanian underage teams
  • has not played in an official competition (FIFA or UEFA) for the Romanian "A" team
Presuming the accuracy of the first (parent being born in Australia) and second (birthday) points, there are two scenarios where he is potentially eligible for FA representative teams at the moment - after undergoing a change of association process at FIFA.

1) If he held Australian nationality when he first played for Romania in an official competition.​
​
2) If he did not hold Australian nationality when he first played for Romania in an official competition, but now holds Australian nationality, then he must:​
  • not have played for any Romanian youth team in an official competition after turning 21 - meets this as not yet turned 21
  • meet any 'genuine link' requirement in Article 8 - meets this as biological parent was born in Australia
To consider for future planning:
  • if he plays in an official competition for any Romanian youth team after turning 21, he would be ineligible to make a change of association (unless he plays for the "A" team in future in an official competition)
  • if he plays in an official competition for the Romania "A" team, he would need to meet the very strict criteria in Article 10 to make a change of association.
