That's an early call.
I know. He's at Manchester United, 18, Australian born. This could lead to something. The concern again is that other nations can get him. This is a good start but Triantis played for the U20 makes that redundant.

I still stand by it that anyone showing great promise and is at risk of veing poached by another nation needs to be elevated to the national team as they're probably going to make it regardless. Our players develop at an older age but why not aim to have a few more young stars like European nations?

He needs 3 caps at this age. If it were just one time I might agree, but handing out 3 caps is a bit much. Not really relevant anyway as Popa will never do it.

An 18 yo would have to be super special to warrant three caps - especially when we have so much depth right now.

Potentially cheapens the shirt unless picked fully on merit.

I'd like to see us proactively cap players. I think there is room in squads to bring some younger players in. It needs to be strategic. It'd be awful early for Overy though.

Leonard wasn't in the qualifying squad but I would've liked at this tournament. Moving to Schalke is also big.

Off bench against Lebanon, start against Bangladesh and one more time. If he's playing Bundesliga 2 and is 20 years old that's not too far off what we expect. I know there are others ahead but give Miller, Burgess and Rowles a game off just so we can sort this with Leonard and Overy. They're likely to make it. Even this last friendly window saw a couple of unnecessary pics or too much game time for regulars albeit friendlies.

He actually needs 4 caps if the objective is to lock him to Australia before he turns 21.

Or, as has been pointed out by others, he needs to play at either the World Cup or the Asian Cup.

I suspect not. I think the rules refer to the World Cup or the major continental championships.
Its the sort of tournament you could play a weaker squad and give the fringe guys 3 games. Are we actually in it though. Selfishly it'd be great to be in it for that purpose. But not sure its doing the right thing by the ASEAN teams.

I would look at the Joondalup guys, that area is a production line to Europe.

They must be doing something right lets do it in every aussie state.

My understanding is that to lock in a player who is 21 or under, the three games need to be in a World Cup or Asian Cup, or in qualifiers for those tournaments. Friendlies or games played in Mickey Mouse tournaments don't count.

Edit: Sorry, only needs one game if in a WC or AC (or is it just needs to be selected in the final squad?), but three games in qualifiers for WC or AC.

we are not that good to use under strength team and expect for good result against asean teams. Our FIFA ranking are far above the rest that means any draw or loss will see us dropping Fifa points badly.
Stay away from asean championship and also they play dirty and very physical in this tournament.
