Asian Champions League 1 and 2 thread

sheesh, so close to conceding a 3rd

Full time, 10-man Macarthur end up losing 2-1 to Tai Po and go third in group E but may well drop to bottom depending on how the Beijing Guoan v Cong An Hanoi game runs.

I'll be honest, feeling a bit of despair at the state of club football in Australia right now....yes I get that its self inflicted with the regulartory systems we have, doesn't make it any less enjoyable...

Macarthur now bottom of AFC Champions League Two group E at the conclusion of matchday 1 after Cong An Hanoi drew 2-2 with Beijing Guoan in the other game. Hopefully they do better and manage to get a result in their next game which is against Beijing Guoan at home.

Gee wiz we are so fallen off in Asia at club level…

It wasn’t like MacArthur put out an inexperienced team out there either.
I feel like the fact that it is in preseason doesn't matter that much either

We found it harder to face asian teams during their preseason and tended to get our points later in the group stage

Caught the replay of Macarthur and Tai Po.

The red card didn't help but they were anaemic before then, when your best first half chance is a speculative Caceres shot from outside of the box you're in trouble. The Bulls had a ton of possession in the first half, something like 75% and it was all just Brattan jogging around passing it backwards and forwards to Uskok. Then when they got bored of that De Silva or Brattan would lump it to Ikonimidis' head.

Not sure why Sterjovski persists with Ikonimidis at striker, he offered nothing there last season, even less in the Aus Cup and probably caused this loss with his lack of movement in the first half. Not sure what Sawyer has to do to get a start but he definitely improved the attack in the second half. Just by consistently making, albeit very slow, runs into dangerous positions.

Helweh had some nice moments and Damevski ran hard but after the red card the damage was done.

Not sure why Bosnjak got hooked at half time. He was the probably the Bulls' only vaguely energetic player and his energy created their few couple of half chances in the first half. Maybe not to piss off their new visa player?

Randazzo didn't have the grit or work rate to make up for Brattan's defensive "efforts". Brattan barely gets out of a jog these days and while simultaneously he is a decent playmaker he starting to be a real liability for Macarthur. Tai Po just marked him out of the game and Macarthur's back four could only pass it between themselves.

They especially can't have him and Caceras on at the same time as they got out run by some blokes from the Brazilian Four Divison. Randazzo could be a good option with time but he simply can't carry the defensive duties of two midfielders. Not sure why it took so long to get Liam Rose on.

Overall a depressing watch, without the red card Macarthur probably would have come back. But considering the opposition a goal in open play is a minimum requirement even when down to ten. RIP Coefficient FC.

No Lawrence Wong?

🇦🇺 Max Caputo and Liam Bonetig are away on international duty.
🤕 Mathew Leckie, Medin Memeti (both hamstring), Andreas Kuen (quad) and Ben Mazzeo (knee) have remained in Melbourne with minor injuries, but are in contention for ALM R1.
🩼 Ale Lopane (ankle) and Lawrence Wong (knee) have both recently undergone surgery and are unfortunately set for longer stints on the sidelines.

I have a question:

We know if you reach a level above the a league you piss off to go anywhere else.

Is the turnover the same in Japan?
