Asian Champions League 1 and 2 thread

Thanks to Melb City we won’t have that extra spot in the ACL, total let down once again. They should be kicked out of the ALM as they’re only in its for them self and have no respect for football in Australia.

Very ironic from you, being an Aussie and supporting a New Zealand team in your national league.

Crazy take given that Buriram are also fighting to keep Thailand’s coefficient high. Also, keep in mind that it was a ninth-placed City side (albeit underperforming given their squad’s strength and the fact that they’re the reigning ALM champions) up against a Buriram side who are about to win their fifth title in a row (they’re currently 13 points clear at the top of the T1).

How’s does a bunch of pro footballers not no how to take a pen? To lose like that from Melb City was just outright pathetic.

Did they ever to be fair lol? Daniel Arzani is washed and couldn’t even make it for Ferencváros. Aziz Behiç is too old. Ryan Teague got a lucky move to Mechelen then came straight back. We can do better than Pat Beach. Marcus Younis needs minutes overseas. Did I miss anyone?
The past hype over Teague always mystified me.

Unfortunately all the City and Bulls performances will do is deepen negative perceptions of the standard of the A League.
Which only shows that they don't know what they're talking about.

City finished only 3 points off Machida in top spot (and City was the only team to defeat them). Also, City didn't get to play any of the bottom three feams like all the others did.

Their failure last night is on Vidmar for being too conservative.

Macarthur dominated the group stage. But absolutely choked one leg.

And we've put on a shit-tonne of coefficient. The last three seasons in Asia have been very good trying to make up for lost ground. Anyone who thinks it's been negative has NFI.

Finally caught up an watched the entire City/Buri game.

Was appalled that only 1 Thai was on the pitch for Buri.

Why?

* It did nothing to foster Thai football.

Negatives

* Quite a few Buri players, including Aussie McDougall, when he came on, were cynical, senior pros, who used their bodies well and fouled persistently younger Aussies. Most Thais play with quite a degree of skill.
The Buri Foreign Legion of Aussies, Brazilians, Austrians, Indonesian, German, Serbian, Italian, played anti- football. Congrats to Buri for stifling City game based more on skill, but the Austrian brother of the guy sent off, McDougall, the Serb, plus others, all should have recived a red card for a second yellow that had no intent of going for the ball.

* Given the game and the physicality of Buri, Vidmar should have played Delbridge - the biggest, strongest City player. City could have played a 3 man attack with a back three in a 3-4-3 with the ball, 5-4-1, 5-2-3 without it.

* I fell Arzani's time as a winger is over. He needs to play inside forward , twin number 10, or single 10. He is more effective in tight spaces as a creator, due to his appalling finishing. The athleticism of Younis and Mazzeo is showing him up.

* Teague still isn't the player he was before he wen tot Belgium. Another wasted UEFA transfer. He plays better with Jordi Valadon near him.

* Behich isn't doing enough to sustain a Socceroo LB position. Having said that, he and Arzani have the best game sense of City players, have superior vision, and read the game better. The Argentine and French national CBs are good too.

* Atkinson should be better at RB if he wants a Socceroo berth, like all the predecessors I've named.

* Kuen was poor again.

* Off forum Grazor thinks the ref was consistent. I thought he was poor letting too much go, and should have sent off more Buri players. Silly sending Ferreyra off too. What do our forum refs, Paul01, Nick CB and Muz think?

*City should have kept the ball better in tighter spaces against the cynical, Buri hacks.

* Buri played a very good defensive game, staying organised and compact with 10 men.

* Replays are killing goalscoring. Atkinson's goal would have stood in the past.

* Poor City finishing, although Caputo went close from difficult positions.

What has been good?

* Younis' wing development. Vidmar should have swapped him and Arzani more though.

* Beach, Shillington, Memeti and Caputo continue to develop. The young City players have performed superbly.

* Overall, City have done well in this ACL comp, although they should have changed the rhythm more against 10 men.

I'm not suggesting perception is reality, to be clear. Just that this will reinforce prejudices. Personally, I have been very happy with the standard of football in the games I have watched this season.

Yes, I know what you mean. What do they expect? The EPL? That level of cost bloat and corruption?? It's pure knee-jerk stuff, part of the cultural cringe that has generally afflicted this country as long as I can remember.

Agree that the Melbourne City finishing was poor throughout the match as the players created chances but failed to capitalise on them, and they didn't make the numerical advantage they had for most of the match count either.

With city out of Asia, any chance they can start taking points off other teams in the A-league? or are they busted this year despite the jan signings?

After losing in Asia the Bulls just haven’t been mentally not there and are preforming pretty poorly. Maybe this will happen with City or the players will lift amd put it behind them. Let’s see how they go next game.
