Asian Champions League 1 and 2 thread

I noted 5 players for City were not starting players in the AL.

What is going on? Does Vidmar undervalue the ACL? 5 City players were underage. However, they did remarkably well and got a great result. I expected City to have the depth to do damage in the ACL.

What was apparent with Burinam, and Melvia, they have a lot of very experienced players. Yet in Burinam's case only 2 of them were domestic Thai players.

I'd rather play teams of 9 Aussies like, City, also playing youth, as opposed to others like Burinam, and do worse.

Look at China. They do well in the ACL, but constantly underperform as a Chinese national team.

I think City held their shape well, and did some desperate last line defending when Melvia had the ball.

City also held the ball well at times for some periods. There seems to be a tendency ATM for AL teams to sit back off the ball with only moderate Squeezing intensity, then increasing it occasionally in the attacking third. Not SFC though.

International teams playing the Socceroos recently, and Melvia, apply more intensive Squeezing higher up the pitch in Full Presses, ceding space between the Defensive and Midfield lines, or Defensive line and keeper.

I'm biased, but Atkinson struggles as a Left Back. He isn't confident with his left sided body shape receiving and playing forwards like he does on the right flank . His 1v1 defending needs to improve, which it had in Scotland and in the last AL Grand Final.

Atkinson's best position is as a box to box midfielder - as an AM or number 8. His attacking prowess centrally and on the right side is a feature of his game. He has a good engine too.

I'm glad Trewin has been selected for the Socceroos. He is a dual purpose player - sitting as a number 6 or DM, and is a slick ball playing CB. Very adaptable. I think to add him to Circati, Geria, Rowles, Degenek, Souttar and Burgess, we have plenty of depth at CB ATM.

He can also play the DM for the Roos with Irvine as a number 8.

Trewin was missed as a DM for City against Melvia.
They’re down to bare bones. So many injuries

China haven’t been doing well in the ACL, from memory I think they are in the bottom 3 places?
Melbourne City have Behich, Leckie and a couple of others injured I think. So that explains the difference in playing personnel I believe.

8 players injured and one on international duties. % hammies, 1 ACL, 1 MCL & 1 ankle.

A few seasons back I thought they had been excelling?

I might be wrong though.

Having a look at Mac v the V League team.

There are a few young players in Mac.

7 Aussies in the line up.

Wow City are flying ATM. I think they’ve run over the top of Burinam and now Machida Zelbia in the last 20 mins of each game.

Then they beat MV in the derby.

Just can’t get over how good the kids are who’ve been in the Melb City Academy.

Theyve been declining for a few seasons. If we can avoid losing our acl spot the next two seasons we will get an extra spot from chinas decline
ATM the injury replacement City kids are going to keep us up in the ACL.

They might need a bit of height though. Machida Zelbia dwarfed City.

ATM in the Mac v V L game, they are giving Brattan too much time on the ball. He is playing some pinpoint long passes.

Unfortunately Diamanti has left MC to coach in Italy. The 'kids' are his product, so it will be interesting whether MC can keep the assembly line going.

Atkinson joins the injury list with a Hamstring!
3 of the starting back 4 for City now out with Hamstring injuries.
When Atkinson went off last night, the back Four consisted of a 16 year old, an 18 year old, a 20 year old and a single experienced player in Ferreyra. Remarkable how well they did.

Johor with a period of dominance here. City need to settle things

kanamori is so frustrating to watch

I just had a thought If vidmar takes us to knockouts the higher up suits might send him to another cfg club.
