I notedj 5 players for City were not starting players in the AL.
What is going on? Does Vidmar undervalue the ACL? 5 City players were underage. However, they did remarkably well and got a great result. I expected City to have the depth to do damage in the ACL.
What was apparent with Burinam, and Melvia, they have a lot of very experienced players. Yet in Burinam's case only 2 of them were domestic Thai players.
I'd rather play teams of 9 Aussies like, City, also playing youth, as opposed to others like Burinam, and do worse.
Look at China. They do well in the ACL, but constantly underperform as a Chinese national team.
I think City held their shape well, and did some desperate last line defending when Melvia had the ball.
City also held the ball well at times for some periods. There seems to be a tendency ATM for AL teams to sit back off the ball with only moderate Squeezing intensity, then increasing it occasionally in the attacking third. Not SFC though.
International teams playing the Socceroos recently, and Melvia, apply more intensive Squeezing higher up the pitch in Full Presses, ceding space between the Defensive and Midfield lines, or Defensive line and keeper.
I'm biased, but Atkinson struggles as a Left Back. He isn't confident with his left sided body shape receiving and playing forwards like he does on the right flank . His 1v1 defending needs to improve, which it had in Scotland and in the last AL Grand Final.
Atkinson's best position is as a box to box midfielder - as an AM or number 8. His attacking prowess centrally and on the right side is a feature of his game. He has a good engine too.
I'm glad Trewin has been selected for the Socceroos. He is a dual purpose player - sitting as a number 6 or DM, and is a slick ball playing CB. Very adaptable. I think to add him to Circati, Geria, Rowles, Degenek, Souttar and Burgess, we have plenty of depth at CB ATM.
He can also play the DM for the Roos with Irvine as a number 8.
Trewin was missed as a DM for City against Melvia.
