Age grade Matildas teams thread

Full time at the Pathum Thani Stadium. The Young Matildas lose 3-0 to reigning Asian and world champions North Korea and our campaign comes to an end at the quarterfinal stage, meaning that we also fail to qualify for the under-20 Women's World Cup in Poland in September.

FA youth team development needs a serious overhaul. Struggling to qualify almost every tournament…
I don't think the development in the Matildas farm system needs an overhaul but tactics definitely need to change so we can contend against the likes of North Korea and Japan at age grade level instead of having the girls commit errors which lead to us conceding goals and Skye Halmarick blanking in score involvements as well as not having a single shot altogether along with the rest of the forward line.

Part of the problem is European clubs don’t wanna release their players. Daniela Galić is 19 and coulda played in this. North Korea’s players all play in North Korea whereas we send our best ones overseas to play in better quality leagues. This is why North Korea keep winning junior titles but aren’t as good at a senior level.

Every player in the Young Matildas playing list that went to Thailand for the under-20 Women's Asian Cup except Jasmine Black came from the Dub and clearly there is something wrong with the Matildas farm system at under-20 level if we cannot contend for age grade titles despite how good youth development in A-League Women is touted as being.

Again the minute someone’s really good they’re gone. Indi dos Santos woulda been gone this season if she didn’t get injured for example.

Agree that the youth prospects who are of a high calibre in the Dub moving overseas has partially contributed to the Young Matildas being unable to contend for age grade titles but I think the coaching is also to blame because despite having lots of potential the players are not adapting to the tactical system and end up being stifled by stronger opposition in Japan and North Korea as well as committing unforced errors.

I disagree, the development system needs a massive overhaul as Joe Montemurro has pointed out. It’s very ad hoc and coaches get very little time with squads prior to tournaments.

Was there a big difference in skill? Or were the North Koreans just a lot fitter?
They are a more skilful team with a better technique and are probably fitter all due to their highly intensive training from a young age. They are a physical team and like to disrupt the flow of the game, all of which Australia found difficult to deal with.

To be fair the Matildas also committed many unforced errors in their quarterfinal in addition to being stifled by North Korea.

I don’t know if it was nervousness that caused so much poor passing but there were far too many turnovers.
Most of the players have played in age tournaments before so it shouldn’t have been a reason.
It’s something that coaching staff will have to work on.

Agree that there were far too many turnovers from the girls and Ilona Melegh should not have been that far off her line which led to us conceding the third goal, but definitely getting the tactical system across and being able to have the right mentality going into big matches are things the Young Matildas need to work on going forward.

Having just rewatched the game against North Korea I will give my thoughts.
Our defence was poor at ‘man marking’ although they dealt with Korea’s physicality well, our goalkeeper was ‘shaky’ although I don’t think she had much confidence in the defence. In midfield I thought McMahon and Younis did well, Butrus has to learn to play a team game and not try to do everything herself. Upfront Halmarick was almost invisible, Prakash had a good game all things considered so did Fuller when she came on.
The officiating was poor and the referee should have put a lid on the disruptive play of Korea early on.
I can’t understand why the coach didn’t have Trimis, Fuller and Prakash as the attacking combination as they do well in the Mariners setup.
