AFCON 2025

As disappointing as it was to lose that right at the end, we've kind of brought this on ourself. So much drama around the camp and which players were selected, and our coach went in with a very defensive mindset. I get that Egypt were expected to win, but we gave them way too much possession and time on the ball. Our coach has always been ruffling feathers, so not surprised with how things are going.

Next game for Zimbabwe at AFCON is against Angola who lost their opener with South Africa by the same scoreline so I think they should be able to bounce back and get a result, especially given how well they performed in their group opener and managed to keep a clean sheet until the 64th minute of the match.

Burkina Faso scored two late goals in the fifth and eighth minute of second half stoppage time to defeat 10-man Equatorial Guinea 2-1 in their group E opener. Aamir Abdallah, who currently plays in NPL Victoria, named on the bench for Sudan in the other group E game against Algeria.

Gabon’s national team has been suspended by the government after a winless AFCON, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga banned from selection and the coaching staff dissolved. Gabon finished bottom of Group F after losing all three games in Morocco.

Reckon Albo would attack more than Popovic so it's worth a try.

Would this not constitute government interference, and they'll be banned by FIFA?

I think there may still be consequences for Gabon regarding government interference with the national team, but in the past it was commonplace for African governments to disband teams altogether following poor results until FIFA cracked down on the practice.

Senegal came from behind to defeat Sudan 3-1 in the first AFCON round of 16 game, with Pape Gueye scoring a brace in the 29th minute and third minute of first half stoppage time. Ibrahim Mbaye the other goalscorer for Senegal, whilst Aamir Abdallah scored the opening goal and only goal of the game for Sudan in the sixth minute.

Avondale FC’s Aamir Abdallah.

Egypt defeat reigning champions Ivory Coast 3-2 in their AFCON quarterfinal, with Mo Salah scoring the winning goal in the 52nd minute to ensure that there'll be a new champion this year. They'll play Senegal in the semi-finals, with Nigeria playing hosts Morocco in the other semi after both sides defeated Algeria and Cameroon respectively.

Wow what drama and controversy to end the tournament. Not watching but reading Morocco get a penalty at the death which Senegal disagree with and have left the pitch. The penalty is save once they finally return.
