AFC qualifying thread

I just realised that doesn’t have me break down how I’d do qualifying for AFC without an absorbing of Oceania.

Issue is - AFC play waaaaaaaay too many games to qualify, compared to a lot of the other confederations.

NZ only needed 5.
UEFA is 6-8
CAF is 10
CONCACAF is 10

AFC is 16…
(South America is 18 - but that’s a different kettle of fish)

Groups of 4 are a bit dull. I'd prefer a longer qualification process with at least 6 teams. The issue is then whether the 2nd placed teams qualify or not. The current 3 group system was ideal. The better teams do eventually rise but the others have plenty of opportunities to dent the group also.

Totally forgot that Qatar goal against India.

Will have to give this one a read.

RE: Qualifying format - Unless two nations are admitted to AFC, can't do an equal "8 groups - 1 round - winners progress" format until then.
Would it then be better to have the final round be 4 groups of 6 in the final round, where the top two qualify automatically, and then they do a playoff path (same format as CAF and UEFA at the moment) for the 4x third placed teams.

Just read Japan wants to leave the AFC and form its own confed, as there sick of the bias towards the Arab states, a Sth east Asian confed.

Iraq have looked bad in the play offs so far, any1 think Arnolds Iraq has a chance in these matches against the UAE.

Such an outrageous decision, but sadly, not surprising. Glad the NY Times are shining a further light on this. Absolutely pathetic to hand Qatar and Saudi their spots the way that they did. Clearly not good enough to earn it the correct and proper way. Infantino is no better than Blatter really, and insults don't get much bigger than that.

Just reading this on Wikipedia re: hosting of U17 World Cup. So disgusting! Completely rigged and zero transparency. So fucked up!

On 15 November 2023, FIFA launched a global call for expressions of interest from member associations to host the next five editions of the U17 World Cup (2025–2029) as a single consolidated package. Member associations had to express their interest no later than 4 December 2023. After a FIFA Council meeting held on 14 March 2024, it was announced that Qatar would host the next five editions of the U-17 World Cup (2025–2029), as part of the new annual cycle implemented by FIFA for the tournament. Although FIFA did not disclose whether there were other interested member associations, a joint bid by Indonesia and Singapore and another by Denmark were known to have been submitted. This is the first time that Qatar hosts the FIFA U-17 World Cup and the third time that the tournament is held in the Arab world.
