Leah Blayney has been appointed as Calgary Wild head coach and will be at the club with Kahli Johnson. It's not known how long she'll be under contract for but her first match at the helm of the side will be their home game against Tori Tumeth and Vancouver Rise this week.

I presume you are referring to 11 ALW teams, there are only 9 teams of which only 1 is coached by a woman.

Alexia Apostolakis is making the move to Bristol City, moving overseas for the first time in her career. It's not known how long she'll be under contract at the side for but she joins Emily van Egmond, Alana Murphy and Kaitlyn Torpey as part of the Matildas abroad contingent plying their trade in WSL 2 heading into season 2026-27.

Alexia Apostolakis is making the move to Bristol City, moving overseas for the first time in her career. Correct. I like to let people travel and experience the world. She’s a top coach so obviously she’s gonna go after more lucrative deals overseas. I can’t really blame her, if I was in her position and was offered the job for more money I’d rather take it than be unemployed and wait out for another job.

Knowing Brisbane Roar they wouldn’t have even contacted her. They’re such a badly run club and that goes for the men’s team and academies too. None of their fans like the Bakrie Group. She can’t just waltz up and take the job if the club don’t wanna pay her.

Trust me, we’re not going down the gurgler. We worry too much about how we’re so far behind and while that’s a problem, we fail to realise how far ahead we are.

I’ll use my experience as an ex-expat and long-time tragic for men’s and women’s football. I lived in and travelled to countries with completely amateur leagues and barely any attendance. Of course this was years ago but things still haven’t improved enough. It was essentially like watching clubs play in the park. Making even the A-League would’ve been a dream come true for them, whereas kids here can dream of going and winning Champions Leagues and playing in World Cup semi-finals.

If there aren’t any jobs here for her to take, I can’t be mad that she’s taking another job rather than being jobless. I don’t doubt she’ll be back eventually though, Calgary Wild are rubbish and haven’t even won a game yet so she might even resign or get sacked. Who knows? I just hope she does well so she can climb up the ranks. She could potentially be the next Matildas coach if she does well enough.

Interesting observations but the problem is we are letting an experienced football person go overseas whilst our league is drifting down from 12 teams to 9 . But hey! That’s okay we have lots of good football people overseas.

It’s not even at nine teams yet. Canberra were always a mess and Western shouldn’t’ve even gotten a spot and were doomed to fail. Mariners will survive.

Is the ALM failing? Auckland have been good but no Western there either. We can’t just be depressed every minute.

Not depressed but I am disappointed in the failure to build a professional women’s league.
We have had two major tournaments, a successful national team and a whole new audience for women’s football and no one seems in the slightest bit interested in building a workable domestic league.
