A-League Mens 25/26 - Round 8

A lacklustre game by Roar for 60+ minutes I am afraid.

We seem to be playing more and more defensively with each passing game, although I expected this to be a hard fought struggle game beforehand.

Herrington got nutmegged by a brilliant touch from Kraev to advance into the box, with Klein covering well to stop anything further - but it doesn't count against Herrington. Just a real unexpected quality touch by Kraev. The goal line clearance by Herrington off a Kraev header more than balanced that out.

The last 10-15 minutes of the game Wanderers peppered the Roar goal mouth - clearly capable of building an attack they just lacked the presence and luck to finish any one of them. They would be spewing not to have taken the three points.

Got to say the ref was a tosser when he was getting cranky at us getting set for our first long throw. As the commentators said at the time, Wanderers had been taking ages to do long throws all game. Coach Stajic got cranky over our 'time wasting' when his player ripped the shoelace out of Klein's top lace hole and Klein had to relace his boot. Whinger. The ref prejudging our time wasting though shows a lack of impartiality I don't like regardless of what has happened in previous games.

Bility had 2 awful moments - one passing the ball direct to a free Wanderers player and the second having no clue where Kraev was behind him for the best Wanderers chance when Kraev headed over the bar unguarded. You could see Bility turning to follow the path of the ball and nodding his head towards it in futile hope when it was a good metre away from him.

I agree - let's hope it is just cobwebs as he was starting to improve his impact on games when he was last playing regularly.

Klein off with a concussion substitution is bad for us. He is one of the key cogs in our team when he is playing well.

We had a more balanced period of play for a good spell at the start of the second half, but the longer the half went on the more our substitutions made us play with less and less direction and focus - other than to drop back to our defensive positions sooner and let Wanderers pass round our one or two forwards attempting to slow the attack pointlessly.

Disrupting our 'set starters' with injuries and rotation is proving to be more damaging to our play than should be expected. I did not feel like we were going to score - although the two times O'Shea lined up a shot there was a glimmer of hope - but every time a cross came in we looked toothless with no-one attacking the ball and just lofted headers with no direction or drive being easily defended.

Open play remains our best chance of goals and playing without a midfield presence like today stuffs up our chances of building those.

I liked Borello for his return for the Wanderers. He made an impact and had a few chances. Barbarouses on the other hand seems less and less effective for all the effort he puts in.

Roar have only lost 1 game this season so I give them credit for that, but man they play some ugly football. I can’t see the home crowds getting any bigger if they have to watch horror ball for 90 odd minutes.

Unless we win off one of our well jagged goals ;).

You can tolerate 90+ minutes of dross if you win even though you feel every minute of it. I agree though we are unlikely to have fans pour back in quickly playing overly defensively.

Wanderers are one of a few teams who will cancel out our playing style - unfortunately today we did not seem to employ much of our playing style at all.

As a Roar fan, I think Ruhs and Vidic set us up better for a stylish finish by Hore and Long than starting with our smarter ball players based on our recent games. I'd go with the bulls early and class to finish it.

Battle for the spoon! Will it be Adelaide or Vuck with there name on it!

Who woulda thought Victory would lead at half time thanks to Nikos Vergos of all players?

United playing like garbage. What’s with the 1-2m chip balls, click passes and tikka-takka crap? 3, 4, 5 passes in 2-3m only to turn over possession.

Victory have been playing some of the best football I have seen this season.

Vellupilai has shown some exceptional control and vision, but the touch and passing all over has been really attractive football.

Will be interesting to see how long the Adelaide public will be generous for because this team is so bad. The amount of times they had good field position in the first half and would turn around and go all the way back to the keeper had me wanting to throw the remote at the tv.

I know plenty of coasties who go on occasion but they're buggered from work as are the kids with school and on a Friday they just want a quiet night in. Probably got sport the next day too.

An excuse but not one made in other countries if your club is playing Friday night. I expect crowds to pick up once the holidays begin and the weather is decent.

As John Portsmouth FC said, when Pompey are losing, that's when they need the fans most. It's great to be winning but I've found some of the best Hannover atmospheres to be when they're down and they scrape out a result against a better opponent.

Valadon is classy. A definite for next world cup cycle and a world cup smokey.

I know there’s a number of reasons for CCM having low crowds such as the uncertainty surrounding the ownership, terrible weather, having clearly the weakest squad in the league and no sign of the club appointing a new head coach but the crowds shouldn’t be anywhere near as bad as they are.

Definitely seems like the fair weather fans have dropped off now that CCM aren’t good anymore.

Covered most of it - but I will add a four more more.

People are very parochial here. To the club yes, but also to the players. But there is a limit. The squad from June 2023 (grand final vs City) to June 2025 has been decimated. Yes we want our best to go OS - but Richard Piel decimated the squad twice (not just to OS) and pissed off Anton Tagliaferro who has housing much of our Academy through his foundation. So he basically has gutted the main squad twice and undermined the academy. Only Steele, Theo and Roux remain from that Grand Final match day squad.

The admin of the club was always thin - but it had very good people. These were also shown the door under Peil and their replacement might have been trying hard but they just weren't at the same level. There seems to be a similar turnover again there with the proposed new owners bringing in new people. The communication to the fans has been abysmal, my physical season pass only arrived this week. Mosts season we get a bit of a run on NBN news. This year nothing much at all. Is that NBN TV or the club going silent?

Then the rumour spread in the Sydney papers is that Haliti ( a Jet ) is favourite to be Manager. People are wary with good reason. He has failed in the NPL - why is he even being considered - obviusly the Sydney Olympic connection.

Finally - it is a Friday night 2 weeks from Christmas in a commuter region where a lot of people are kicking on in Sydney for their company Christmas parties. The corresponding fixture last year was also on a Friday and only drew just over 4000 and was our lowest crowd for the year. the year before it was also on a Friday and again it was the lowest crowd of the season with just over 4000 (this the year after winning the Championship and on the way to the treble).

Friday is a killer for us normally - this close to Christmas is just poor scheduling from the APL.
