We need to find a way to market our young players then, after all if some are good enough to play the 2nd tier of europe, thats the same quality as yesteryears marquees

I think football australia should see the junior teams, olyroos in particular, as products like they do the roos and matildas and try and get revenue off them. Would be hard after a couple of decades of saying youth results dont matter. But back in the 90s the youth world cups and olyroos got media and fan interest

It may be that our keepers are putting more magic into their gloves.

I have seen a lot of keepers keeping their sides in games they don't deserve to be in.

Even in the Championship and NPL we saw some keepers <cough South Melbourne cough> whose fans acknowledge they got anywhere because of their keeper's brilliance when it counted.

Strikers do seem to be missing their fair share of sitters this season though. We saw players like Badalato and Armiento (just to name two) who could not miss in the first few games. They have all had chances to score similar goals since and can miss badly.

I do think we are missing the strikers who "never miss" this season rather than keepers being that much better all the same.
 
The thing about Berisha, Bruno, Thompson and Brosque is that you need to flip the coin and remember who were their defensive counterparts. And the names are....MDP and .....
And the forwards are as good as the midfield but today I would struggle to name someone who could match it with Broich.

The best players 10 years ago were clearly better but the worst seems to have improved despite the reliance on youth

Read up on Broich. He was a pretty big star in Germany as a young player and something stalled his career. He was a terrific recruit for the AL.

Another good imported CB was Bart ?, a Dutch national, who played for Melb City.

I think we are seeing the continuing rise of counter-attacking football, possibly due to data. Fewer of the front-foot teams are dominating like they once did. Man City don't look the Man City of a few seasons ago, albeit they could still win the EPL this season. Arsenal are more conservative than the Arsenal of Wenger's era. Liverpool I think play more reactive football than the Liverpool of old. So to Aston Villa under Emery. The attacking football of Ferguson is a distant memory at Man Utd. Rangers have struggled to successfully impose their football in Scotland although there's been other issues that have contributed. Celtic have been successful imposing their style but it'll be interesting to see if Hearts under McInnes can upset the apple cart this season.

I stand to be corrected on this because I'm not sure but I think it was Prter Taylor (of Clough/Taylor fame) the transfer genius who said goalkeeper is the most important position and best value for money in the transfer market, or something to that effect.
