A-League Mens 25/26 - Round 2

We looked like we pass the ball because it’s just part of the game.

They looked like they were passing the ball because they have an idea they’re attempting to execute on the pitch. You could see after their lay offs the movement. And passing with intent.

We psss and its like ‘ok my job is now done’

We really looked like we had no plan at all.

Disappointing start after a good pre season.
I think you had a plan for a game that did not eventuate.

You were structured and marking like you would against a side trying to maintain possession and build attacks across the pitch. You were faced with a dynamic and fast opponent who did not play football like 'traditional' aleagues clubs do.

Failed to adjust at all in the first half and only partially successful in the second. I expect many teams to struggle similarly against the will-o-the-wisps until they figure out how to negate the fast interplay and seemingly random flow.

One thing though about Popovic in the stands. Every time I hear that, his former team or favoured players are on the pitch - and my only thought is that Victory could lose 10-0 and he would still only be considering his own trained players for a call up.

Baddolato is a good shout for a national training squad position if he maintains his form - but this close to the WC I don't think we should be looking too much at dark horses. We are now in the zone when it is important to build some cohesion and understanding between our starting players - which is totally irrelevant to this thread but also explains a lot about why Popa only picks his self-trained players - they can slot in quickly.

Jets were outstanding. Playing amazing attacking football. It's not just Badolato its all the other young quick players as well. That Jets midfield is amazing the constant moving and desire to get things going quickly. They desperately need better defenders and a goalkeeper though, that will be their Achilles heel this season. Amazing job by Millsy. Doing a fantastic job and you can see has a clear vision of what type of players he wants and the style of play he wants which in turn will only make it easier for the players. Very refreshing after last week's poor matches to watch

TBH, there is no Victory player on the pitch besides Generau who should be considered atm.

Nish if fit 100% has to go. Been outstanding for Australia

Genreau had a lot of dirty play in him last time he was here, and I saw one nasty little trip off the ball last night that was unnecessary and risked a card for no gain.

I like his actual play and vision, but if he cannot take the nasty out of his game I don't want him near the national side.

There is a need for hard, tough play, and cynical fouling when required - but not nasty in my book. That costs you games.

Some phenomenal attacking interplay from Jets in first half!

Not just Badalato’s goal involvements, but Dobson ( who looks about 14), Boshello ? ( blond youngster) and Burgess’s attacking interplay in some scintillating passages of play!

Being so young, apart from Burgess (Talay you are a moron overlooking his ability), they will be inconsistent, but it all clicked in that first 45mins.

Disappointed in Valadon for MV. A few trampoline touches, plus isn’t on the ball enough. He and Stella need to work harder to shake their markers to open passing lanes. Jordi V did some excellent passing and moving in tight spaces, but not enough of it.

Genreau has improved though.

Burgess wasn't a regular starter prior to Talay arriving. I think That Millsy has done wonders for him. So I wouldn't put it all on SFC.

Watching the MVC vs PG. Beach is incredibly lucky not to have conceded two goals due to poor decision making. Not sure who the bench keeper is but it may pay to bench him so that he stops making stupid decisions.
Sadly PG are no better than last season. It may be time for Zdrillic to concede that he is a better assistant than manager.

The high score round is on, great by City, we have some good young players, Caputo, Mazzeo, Schreiber, Akbari.
Also nice to see Leckie play and not get injured.

Did the young players in the league receive the memo that it's a crap league or something and now they're putting out a statement?

So many quality hits and lots of good play so far this season.
Are we watching a cohort of really talented youth or is the system starting to work?

sort of

we don't have any u20 playing epl or rangers or u21s playing champions league

but I'm expecting a substantial bump even if it doesnt get us to where we were before
i think we need a nyl and some access to fulltime strength and condition and training loads at 16 (like the ais did) to compliment the current system to get back to where we were

I don't think it's not about being good enough. It's just the moves abroad mean there's more competition and those clubs have their local jewels or favourites. I'm sure if played regularly they'd make a good account of themselves. It's the rotting on the bench that shakes the confidence.

Good win for SFC tonight, CCM were woeful and only had there first shot at goal on the 79min mark.

SFC were nothing until they went ahead. Mariners defence had been ok and a lot of SFC shots really were low percentage - think Canada vs Australia before the Izzo one on one save.

In reality they scored an offside goal (Toure came back from an offside position and blocked Tapp defending. Definite offside. It wasn't a huge block - but enough to stop Tapp being in position) and a goal in the last minute of normal time. No doubt they were the better side - but not as dominant as the commentators would have it.

If the goal had been disallowed as it should have been then Sydney probably would have felt the strain. As it was once the goal was allowed they played with no pressure and looked ok without being inspiring.
