A-League Mens 25/26 - Round 1

What’s the story with VAR being used to over-rule a free kick and yellow card. I thought VAR was restricted to offsides, red cards and penalties. I think the refs have screwed up hugely here.

Edit: VAR can also rule on whether a goal has been scored (ball crossing line).
They can be devious and ask the ref to see if he thinks the yellow card might have been a red - then the ref can say that it wasn't even a yellow. Sneaky, but technically legal.

I thought they may also be able to use VAR if a card has been shown to the wrong player.

I don't know if a ref is allowed to ask for VAR if he/she thinks they have missed something or got it wrong (for example, if a player is claiming serious misconduct, the ref/assistants saw nothing, and VAR is not already checking that incident).

None of that answers your question or allows the actions you are talking about.

Yes it can be used to fix mistaken identity.

While VAR can be used to see if a yellow should be upgraded to a red, it can’t be used to overturn a yellow (except mistaken identity), even if the video suggests that it should not have been yellow. And it can’t be used to overturn a free kick, only a penalty. So they were wrong on two counts here. What they did wasn’t technically legal, it was technically wrong.
I would expect some statement from APL on this in due course.

CCM night and day compared to last year, from ponderous and slow, to enthusiastic press and quick ball play.
A new coach could be the difference, they're looking a lot better than last year with pretty much the same team.

Well that was an epic F3 derby! Redmayne saves the penalty and seconds later they score the winner.

Mariners very committed and bustled the Jets.Jets looked more dangerous when Rose came on.Top penalty save by Redmayne and then plays goes up the other end and Jets keeper and defence get themselves in a muddle and Duarte scores a tap in.
Crowd figure given as 8002.

Hearing reports that Genreau looked superb. Thoughts?

To me I think you have that right - though you probably won't agree with the rest of my reasoning. Looking at it live I think the referee erred. The Jets player rode the initial challenge then felt a small inadvertent hand on his back and dived. To me free kick Mariners - yellow for simulation for the Jets player. But once it went to VAR the decision should have been no red card. Free kick taken, yellow card stands .

Just a strange stat. Redmayne has the reputation as a penalty saver because of the Peru game. At the time of the Peru game he had made 1 penalty save in his ALM career. After today he has 3.

Good round to start off with. Several games had me on the edge of my seat and CCM vs Jets did not do much for my ticker.
One thing that I did notice was that for Melbourne Victory, they had 5 City youth academy players who acquitted themselves well but MVC could not find room for Badalatto? None the less, whatever City are doing in scouting and developing young players, they are obviously doing them reasonably well.
