The premise is more of "If AFC absorbed OFC, and then split into East and West, with around 5 spots each".
In that instance, based on current rankings, NZ is still in the top 5...

If they split AFC by East and West like that, guaranteed NZ would be put in East and we would be put in West.

It was entirely joking - knowing our luck we can never escape the West group.

Ah yep, the 2002 quali and then we got lumped with Uruguay.

I think it was prior to that, would have been part of the expansion from 24 teams to 34, so being lumped with Iran would've been the first instance of that.

Although, from memory, the now defunct Intercontinental Playoffs were randomly drawn at the start of the qualifying campaign aren't they? (as in which confederation plays which out of AFC, OFC, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL)

While it might be easier for A-League based Socceroos, it might be tougher for Europe based ones. There are many pros and cons.

I'd like to see this (take or leave Russia):



Pretty balanced. We'd have 2.39 billion people in the east, and 2.31 billion in the west.

Of course it sucks for NZ, missing out on $80m every four years at the CWC and guaranteed WC qualificaiton.

The difference to me is the international make-up of football.

We're in the AFC and they aren't, which can cause an issue. In all the other sports you listed, I am 99% sure that Aus and NZ fall into the same administrative region for their respective sports.

Geographically Australia, as is NZ, is in Oceania. Administrative regions is a red herring.

Both the Kiwi teams are under the A league administration.

Which is why I made distinct the differences between Football and the aforementioned sports.
