2027 Asian Cup

Elder certainly would help with set-pieces. However, I don't see Elder bombing up and down the left-side in Popa's system. I think he's more of a stand and deliver type. Better suited in Arnie's teams, imo.
Yeah ppl keep suggesting players that arent wingbacks, like Rowles and Farrell. The skillset for a wingback is totally different and is closer to a wide midfielder than a fullback given they are the players that are tasked with getting forward to supply the width in the attacking third in a 3421. Think about Rowles, Farrell and Elder in those positions lol.

Given our plethora of wingers/AMs coming through, id use Metcalfe as the backup there (after J.Bos). The inside wings are well covered by Irankunda, Volpato, Hrustic, Mabil with Younis and McGree to come in.

Furthermore, Id like to see Liam Chipperfield capped ahead of Leckie and Nish.

Has played over a 50 league games now in Swiss top flight and still only 22. Played youth football mostly as a winger but now operates mostly as an AM so would work well as an inside winger.

I dispute that Farrell can't do it since I have seen him do it but that is a moot point when you read below.

I think we need to transition to a back 4 and attack with Bos bombing forward and the other full back moving across to create a back 3. (It would need to be someone at home playing in a back 3. i.e. one wing back and one full back. So a 4-2-4-2 with a box midfield in defense and a 3-2-4-1 in attack. It asks a lot of Bos but he has the engine for it and can be deployed on the left or right depending on the opposition

I like the idea of Metcalfe as the backup to Bos. I think we need to move past Leckie and wasn't ever a fan of Nish. Not so sure about Chipperfield, I don't think he has ever shown any interest at all and seems a bit of a step down.

As an aside at the moment the front two in a box midfield would be Mcgree and Volpato. Given Okon Jr's creative passing and what i consider defensive frailties as a HM i would be using hom in one of this positions. Either as first sub or given Mcgree's propensity to be injured as Volpato's partner.

Plenty of youngsters will be knocking on the door in the next 6-12 months.

Clearly not a Mariners fan or watcher.

Farrell all but invented the LWB role despite playing in a back four. His motor up and down the left was a main reason for him being a fan favourite. Lots of dangerous crosses and a few goals himself in his last two seasons. Better defender than Bos also (am I right Nestory?)

He drifts into the box like an 8, times runs well and good in the air..... from memory

Maybe I've underestimated Elder. Here he says he likes to get up and down the pitch:

And I think he did play at least some of last season at lwb. Generally well regarded at Derby for his crossing. To my knowledge, however, he has never played as the lone wide player, as required in Popa's system.

I guess you could say the same about Bos and Italiano - that they had never played as lone wide players - until selected by Popa.

In this system Trewin either inverts into midfield or stays back maintain a back 3 while in posession. Robertson/Metcalfe/Bos make overlapping runs, Irvine with tactical flexibility to bomb forward with Trewin screening.

Depth, Farrell actually adds to tactical flexibility if playing and fit.

fears about volpato being a mercenary and not going to the asian cup appear to be misplaced

hopefully he can pull off the ultimate coup and convine antonio arena haha

I knew he’d be here for good!!! How could anyone turn down the chance to play at any major tournament? Looking forward to him and Ale Circati’s next meeting with Antonio Arena!

Elder has played as a wing back at club level. I think he'd be okay. But I agree with your point. For a team that relies on wing backs we don't have too many suitable options outside Bos and Italiano. We need someone to step up.

I'd love to see Liam Chipperfield capped. I think we should move on from Hrustic. Chipperfield could replace his role in the team as the more midfield style inside forward. I desperately want to see Bennie capped too. Sapsford also offers something at inside forward.

One of the reasons I’d like to see us go to a back four is that it enables Circati to move to RB. He’s never going to be a RWB, but he’s played RB before for Parma and the Roos.

If it’s a matter of getting your best 11 on the park, then a back line could look like this

Bos - Herrington - Souttar - Circati.

Bos can overlap in attack while Circati stays back, or he can drop into an inverted position alongside the DM. It also means we don’t have to rely on injured players like Italiano, Miller or a repositioned Metcalfe or Trewin, who seem better in other positions.

Some refreshing names being mentioned. I also think Balard needs including. More workhorses in tough conditions.

Popovic is going to hold Younis back too.

If Popa goes with the same formation, I'd like to see any one of Raphael, Younis and perhaps Velupillay paired with Italiano for the rwb spot. Gun to my head I might have a slight leaning towards Raphael, depending on club minutes and form. However, if Miller is back playing by the time the AC rolls around, I reckon Popa will go with him as one of the rwb options.
