2026 World Cup Squad

I wish someone would update the wiki with all the camp invites.

I think that's it for Sapsford or Jack Iredale. Eventually we've go to stop brining every possible person in and narrow things down.
Would be good hey - for now I've updated what is definitely included + the speculated inclusions based off squad numbers. I'm not sure of the squad numbers of those recently included, but if they generally had a number in the past (eg, Jordan Bos #5) I've just included them where I had speculated them and bolded them now as included.

  1. Mat Ryan
  2. Milos Degenek
  3. ???
  4. Kye Rowles
  5. Jordan Bos
  6. Martin Boyle
  7. Mathew Leckie
  8. Connor Metcalfe
  9. Mo Toure
  10. Ajdin Hrustic
  11. Nestory Irankunda
  12. Paul Izzo
  13. Aiden O'Neill
  14. Riley McGree
  15. Mitch Duke
  16. Aziz Behich
  17. Cam Devlin
  18. Joe Gauci
  19. Harry Souttar
  20. Paul Okon-Engstler
  21. Cameron Burgess
  22. Jackson Irvine
  23. Alessandro Circati
  24. Alex Robertson
  25. ???
  26. ???
  27. Raphael Borges Rodrigues
  28. Patrick Beach
  29. Anthony Caceres
  30. Daniel Bennie
  31. ???
  32. Nick D'Agostino
  33. Brandon Borrello
  34. Nishan Velupillay
Unknown number but at camp
  • Dylan Leonard
  • Hayden Matthews (now removed due to injury)
  • Ante Suto
  • Gianni Stensness
  • Jacob Italian
  • Jason Geria
So that is - assuming these 6 unknowns would fit into where I've placed a ??? and all the non-bolded players get selected - a squad of 36 at the moment (including Matthews who we now know is injured)

Brattan fits the profile poppa was looking for according to @scout_aussie someone who covers irvines weaknesses by being able to progress the ball and win a lot of turnovers

Progresses the ball well and gemerates high number of turnovers - 5 a game the season he was picked

I guess like alhassan toure he had the profile but wasnt a high enough level?
Brattan is hugely underrated. It's almost criminal that he will retire having played for Australia only once. He was just about the best player in the A-League this season, people are just so used to him being good that it doesn't register anymore.

I thought he declined a bit this year - went from 5 turnovers a game (tackles plus intercepts) to 4 which is still decent

It's interesting to see Cummings and Petratos mentioned in India this week and it reminded me both went to a WC. They deserved it but our current crop are jut a higher calibre. Petratos was an alright inclusion but we were looking for a couple of fillers. I think our players now are all capable of playing and doing something.

Not this time though. The ISL isn’t a good league.

Here's my squad as of today:
  • Goalkeepers: Joe Gauci, Paul Izzo, Maty Ryan
  • Defenders: Jordy Bos, Cam Burgess, Ale Circati, Callum Elder, Lucas Herrington, Jack Iredale, Jacob Italiano, Fran Karačić, Kye Rowles, Harry Souttar
  • Midfielders: Max Balard, Cam Devlin, Ajdin Hrustić, Jackson Irvine, Riley McGree, Connor Metcalfe
  • Forwards: Antonio Arena, Daniel Bennie, Nestory Irankunda, Deni Jurić, Garang Kuol, Awer Mabil, Ante Šuto, Mo Touré
If Harry Souttar is fit I’d take him for sure. Eliminate one in that case.
How much do we think this has changed?

So far I'm thinking (in order of surname):
  • Goalkeepers: Beach, Izzo, Ryan
  • Defenders: Bos, Burgess, Circati, Elder, Iredale, Matthews, Miller, Rowles, Souttar
  • Midfielders: Balard, Devlin, Hrustić, Irvine, McGree, Metcalfe, Volpato
  • Forwards: Bennie, Botić, Irankunda, Kuol, Sapsford, Segečić, Tilio, Mo Touré
Would be willing to consider many others. Any thoughts?
Or this?

No, not at all. I'm saying that past world cup squads have had a few fillers who we wouldn't expect to get time nor would contribute much. 2014 was the worst. This current squad will see every player being totally ready to play. Popovic has rotated well and knows who he has.

It’s more rather who I would pick.

Any injuries in that squad?
Aside from Matthews, Elder isn't fit yet. Ship has sailed for him. Younis and a few other A League talents won't be called up by the looks.

Th only thing that could save Younis is he is called the same time as Goodwin. What message does that send to everyone though? I think we need to start sending others back such as Borrello and Caceres. Borrello got a bloody social media interview! I respect all the boys but we're really starting to overextend.

Top job by Nic posting the team so far with numbers. So it's 36 so far who are definitely there at some stage (already and the late locks) but no Goodwin and maybe one or two more but it'S looking more and more likely calls won't come. I see Nic has also excluded Balard in the list so the writing must be on the wall for Karacic, Iredale, Goodwin, Balard and Sapsford. Tete Yengi probably too despite still playing.

I still have no idea what I want the 26-man squad to be but I'd want to include names like Arena, Yengi, Sapsford, Balard, Elder, Bennie, Goodwin. I'm gonna have some disappointment.

How much do we think this has changed?
Harrison Devenish-Meares is more likely to replace Joe Gauci as our third string keeper behind Ryan and Izzo, and Callum Elder might not be right for the World Cup given that he's only just starting to return from injury. Riley McGree would still make the list but we need to take load management into account since he'll be in action for Middlesbrough this week before heading over to the pre-camp.

Brattan would be sitting on the sidelines after complaining to the ref twice in the first 10 minutes.
