2026 Australia Cup final rounds thread

Not sure how it looked on tv but it felt like our midfield completely dominated tonight. We were so wasteful when we got into good areas though, eventually we just ran over the top of them. It felt like Prestons goal was like the 2nd time they got the ball in our box, we could have capitulated from that point but the response was great.

Yea the stats reflected that too. South had the better of the game by every metric. Possession was 61-39 in south’s favour. Looked like south were just lacking that final ball and they might regret it/it wasn’t gonna happen for them but in the end the breakthroughs came.

As I say, to go away into that atmosphere and get the result with that level of pressure for players who are ostensibly playing at a semi pro level (I know south are technically a pro club now). Gotta give them credit, deserved the win

And as I said before, it’s not like Preston had a bad game by any means. They were still dangerous at times. Just beaten.

Great game and occasion. These games are becoming must watches now. Both sets of fans well behaved. South had the better of possession and general play and Preston looked very dangerous when counter attacking. We probably just nudged it in the end. Our players looked fresh whilst Preston wilted a little in the last 10 minutes. Resting 5-6 players on Sunday paid off in the end. What was with the Maco folk music being played for several minutes after they scored, really weird.

Credit to South Melbourne. Can’t deny them that win. To go away in front of a big crowd and arguably have the better of the game

I dont think our players are intimidated by Preston, these guys played in front of 15,000 crazy soloman islands fans in the ofc pro league a few months back, Preston is a walk in the park by comparison.

Just saw the interview with the South coach post game and he said its all in as far as prioritising the semi final, so Preston should beat a weakened South in the finals next weekend as that will be played a few days prior. I dont think our depth players can beat Preston.

Im ok with that from our persepctive if it means a crack at the grand final as the dates are a lil rediculous to try turnover players successfully for both comps. Cant afford to take qld lions lightly either.

If i wss preston id seriously look to let the last round slide (if it loses the 3 points also pending) on the hope that they avoid any south team and face another on the pathway to possible NPL title... a big show grand final at lakeside would be FV wet dream if ot can happen.

If they dont face South they will face Avondale away. I think Preston would want South not just for revenge but potentially another big home crowd if we slip up on the weekend. We put so much into tonight that a let down this weekend would not surprise me. I can now also see why all those players were rested last weekend, Sinisa pretty much played our first 11 for 90 minutes.
