The best iteration of lakeside imo was the version when they first converted it to a soccer facility when south first moved into it from middle park. Originally it was the main grandstand as it is today, then concrete terracing on the other 3 sides. The wooden benches that were added later looked a bit crap imo, and then as they aged they started to break and not be fixed etc and looked even worse. Its a much better facility now. I think its a new dawn thing to hate on athletics tracks. If you were arguing from the perspective of behind the goals that would be different, the reality is Lakeside doesnt have a bad seat in the house and the 2 grandstands are excellent for viewing, all with seats. I see a lot of hypocrisy because many of the haters packed out OP and then Marvel stadium when the A league started and those venues were/are much further from the action.
Problem with Lakeside is that its simply too big for us as an npl venue, it would have been a popular nsl ground if it existed in its current form. No doubt that Lakeside has been criminally underutilised, Western knew what they were doing when they tried to muscle in.
Am I correct in saying the reason for the closure of middle park was the relocation of the f1 Grand Prix to albert park? Or was also because it was getting old
