Problem with Lakeside is that its simply too big for us as an npl venue, it would have been a popular nsl ground if it existed in its current form. No doubt that Lakeside has been criminally underutilised, Western knew what they were doing when they tried to muscle in.

The best iteration of lakeside imo was the version when they first converted it to a soccer facility when south first moved into it from middle park. Originally it was the main grandstand as it is today, then concrete terracing on the other 3 sides. The wooden benches that were added later looked a bit crap imo, and then as they aged they started to break and not be fixed etc and looked even worse.

Am I correct in saying the reason for the closure of middle park was the relocation of the f1 Grand Prix to albert park? Or was also because it was getting old

Yes it was because of the relocation of the grand prix.

I agree the wooden seats were average and the original iteration from 1995 to 2001 was the best.

The venue is however undoubtedly a better overall facility now though.
 
Incredibly surprised to hear that South Melbourne fans are salty about their being an aths track at Lakeside.

That's the reason you got the stadium, Eddie Macguire somehow got on the board of Athletics Victoria and turned the home of Athletics in Victoria and Australia into a Collingwood training ground. No conflict of interest there.

From an Aths perspective everyone hates we got punted out to Lakeside. Having athletes come from around Victoria for state or Australia for Nationals while having a single tram line makes it ridiculous for Aths. It barely functions for State Champs let alone anything more. Plus it can't be used during the F1, when Aths need it the most.

South already HAD the stadium mate... Getting in bed with Athletics Australia was Eddie screwing us both over...

Pretty much in a nutshell... Sliding doors moment really, if Melbourne Heart cosnortium wasn't selected instead of South's Aleague bid at the time. Lakeside would have received a rectangular upgrade, Olympic Park would have NOT been demolished for Athletics and Eddie could have gone and screwed himself...... oh well That Caravan bloke and Eddie were great mates apparently... they knew what they were doing.
 
Will southern stand tickets be released? You cant have the biggest grandstand sitting empty.

There have been some poor decisions made, as we all know, but this one was right up there with the worst.

I will be in attendance, want the Jets to win even though their supporters have behaved like morons since Lakeside was announced as the venue. Ideally i'd like to support Heidelberg but if we were in there position they'd want us to lose, so i cant bring myself to it.

Fascinated to see how the atmosphere plays out despite the full house. I suspect 70-75% of the crowd dont support either team.

To be honest I don't think Ill even bother watching on TV mate.... I might catch the highlights if I remember. Not fussed either way who wins or loses.... Would be nice for Newcastle to finally get some silverware.
