A-League Mens 25/26 - Round 6

Anything before 6 is too early imo. Sunset is like 8.30pm now so even a 7pm start is borderline a day game. Starting at 5 or earlier is going to be a struggle. Im not saying crowds are going to be enormous or anything but the Mariners probably do get 2-3k more if its a night game.
Probably right, but we only really have two nighttime days, Friday and Saturday, as Sunday night will be worse than any daytime slot.

And the big one is the broadcast deal, like in every country in the world, you are at their behest.

Looks like var have gotten uber conservative! I think in most leagues var gives that but there have been quite a few decisiona var has let go. They must have instructions that there is a high threshold for overturning a decision

The injustice is a big part of the game so i dont mind. Teaches players mental toughness to deal with setbacks
I'm 100% in agreeance with this, I'm a SFC fan & was there last night & we were all shouting penalty & after numerous replays we were still shouting penalty, but I have yet to see a definitive shot to show clear cut penalty.
This then should always be ref's call & let us continue to argue whether it was or was not a penalty, you only want VAR to intervene where there is no doubt that wrong decision was made.

Herrington is always quality :) - but given the amount of ink I expended on our poor style of play I didn't review each player this time.

A couple of points on Herrington's game though:

He marked up on Reec most of the time to start the game. Reec is only slightly shorter than Herrington (1.88 to 1.92 according to Google) so marking from behind was going to be a tough job on high balls to Reec. Herrington's toes were basically touching Reec's heels when the balls came in and he won more of the high ball challenges outright.

His ground work is still exceptional in our league. I was sitting next to a friend of the family who was at his first Roar game and I pointed out Herrington as a future Socceroo. Right on cue Herrington read the play, shut down a dangerous ball into the box and we kept possession where most would have reacted late and gone the block on the next play. His speed, defensive vision and control are a clear advantage we are going to miss when he goes.

Always read "Herrington was great" if I don't mention any shortfalls ;)
He's going to be a huge loss for us in January

I really rate Herrington on the few occasions I have watched him but don't thing a match-up with Reec is something that would test him. Reec is ungainly which some CB struggle against but I'd like to see Herrington against a better player before I call him a future Socceroo. Any other examples that I can watch?
I agree totally on Reec - but it was defending the high balls coming in to Reec in front position and how close he marked him to take that aspect out of the game that I thought worth a comment.

Most of Herrington's work is done covering space rather than marking an individual. I see his quality every game in the moments where he sees a problem coming and moves to shut it down. It is reminiscent for me of Craig Moore with his ability to see danger and stop it before it actually becomes a problem. Plays with his head and has the physical capability to execute.

I do not have a specific good player in mind that he has individually marked - it is when I see (and fear) looming peril any time in any game and he so often appears and stops it that stands out for me. From my watching experience there are many times I know an opponent is going to get a cross or shot in - and I am still frequently surprised and amazed at Herrington's ability to change the outcome I had considered a certainty.

This game should be either paused, or abandoned, the ball no rolling properly,or even bouncing is totally unsafe

Did you have a redback on Auckland Sutho, it was a slight drizzle. We had one in Newy against Roar a few years back, good fun was had by all, except Roar fans. All the Jets supporters were waiting for the 95th minute goal for Auckland

Not at all. It should have been halted, the integrity of the game is at stake here. Ok in the amateurs, not the pro level.

Player welfare is paramount.

It rains for a living in Manchester and folk cope alright and get to the football.
Yeah, I don’t think it normally pisses down like that in Manchester though. Looks like well over 30 mm of rain fell during the game, if I am reading the NZ Metservice website correctly. I don’t recall seeing too many games from Old Trafford or Etihad where there was so much rain falling or surface water on the pitch.

My quick internet research shows that on average the wettest month in Manchester is December, and the monthly average for December is less than 100 mm. So it doesn’t seem that there would be too many occasions where there would be 30 mm of rain during a match.

In any case, what the good folk of Manchester and surrounds, or the theatre-going visitors, put up with to attend games in Manchester is irrelevant to what our NZ friends do.

Any1 watching the Glory game tonight? I’m might tune into the 2nd half.

Auckland is not known for overly good weather. Anyway, the really heavy rain was in the last 20 minutes of the game.

I am often amazed, but not shocked about the excuses you Aussies make for not attending sporting matches, too hot, too cold, the wrong time of day ,too wet, or too dear.

If it was like it was in the final 20 minutes before the game it wouldn't have gone ahead. As it was I think it should have continued as it did.

Looked like a small crowd in Auckland today maybe 7k
Pretty sure they said 10k on the broadcast.

I couldn't understand them playing on once the ball stopped moving.

Some will no doubt remember a game at Suncorp against the Nix. We were down a goal and had a free kick in the attacking half maybe halfway through the second half and the ref simply said "game over - Nix win".

We did not even get to take our free kick.

Rules said that after halftime the result would stand.

I was watching Auckland and the keeper complaining about his puddle of a workplace and was hoping the ref would finally say "you want the game to stop - OK - Jets win". Unhappily I had to wait till the end of play for that result. Would have been so sweet for a Corica side to lose because they complained.

Fantastic results for the Roar this round. Odd - but every single result ended favourably for us. Second place by a point legitimately now.

I am turning on MacArthur v Glory now.

Yeah I remember that Wellington game. Wasn’t there also something there that the referee couldn’t just stop the game and wait a bit until the rain stopped, because Wellington had a time constraint in needing to get to the airport for their flight home?

Like you, I was waiting during the game today for Faghani to say the field was unplayable and call the result, just to hear Corica’s moaning.
