A-League Mens 25/26 - Round 6

Looks like var have gotten uber conservative! I think in most leagues var gives that but there have been quite a few decisiona var has let go. They must have instructions that there is a high threshold for overturning a decision

The injustice is a big part of the game so i dont mind. Teaches players mental toughness to deal with setbacks

I only managed to see the CCM vs MC game and the WSW vs SFC.

MC are riding their luck. First they have an excellent keeper who single-handedly has kept them in games this season. Schreiber in the middle has been disappointing, can lose the ball through inaccurate passing or just been tackled, rarely opens the game and I thought that once Ugarkovic departed he would step up but hasn't; I can't wait till Lawrence Wong returns from an MCL to put pressure on him. CCM were very competitive and probably should have walked with a win.

WSW were better defensively, although I thought that Panta should have had two yellows. Was it a penalty? My eyesight isn't capable of letting me have an opinion. What I did enjoy was that the game was flowing. The VAR did the work in the background and the players played.

I was going to make time to watch the BR vs MVC game today but I won't bother given the comments in this thread. I noticed that @RIMB did not make his usual comments about Herrington so I am going to presume that he had a serviceable game without being outstanding.

had some emphatic defensive moments actually. Nothing spectacular, but I think he continues to show he has the potential to peak at a very high level

Same crowd for Mariners. I keep saying it, day games will not draw crowds in a summer league.
Concerning numbers. It is a feature of the A League, the high proportion of fair weather supporters. Possibly due to the franchise nature of the beast and lack of long history with communities. I really have no idea how these clubs address that.
But certainly day games are a factor. I'm old enough to recall that one of the key premises when the NSL went over to summer was that all games would be played at night because of the heat. Now we have this ridiculous situation where the TV networks insist on playing day games in the heat of summer in this country of all places. I honestly can't see what's in it for them. Their ratings must be abysmal for those games

Anything before 6 is too early imo. Sunset is like 8.30pm now so even a 7pm start is borderline a day game. Starting at 5 or earlier is going to be a struggle. Im not saying crowds are going to be enormous or anything but the Mariners probably do get 2-3k more if its a night game.

Herrington is always quality :) - but given the amount of ink I expended on our poor style of play I didn't review each player this time.

A couple of points on Herrington's game though:

He marked up on Reec most of the time to start the game. Reec is only slightly shorter than Herrington (1.88 to 1.92 according to Google) so marking from behind was going to be a tough job on high balls to Reec. Herrington's toes were basically touching Reec's heels when the balls came in and he won more of the high ball challenges outright.

His ground work is still exceptional in our league. I was sitting next to a friend of the family who was at his first Roar game and I pointed out Herrington as a future Socceroo. Right on cue Herrington read the play, shut down a dangerous ball into the box and we kept possession where most would have reacted late and gone the block on the next play. His speed, defensive vision and control are a clear advantage we are going to miss when he goes.

Always read "Herrington was great" if I don't mention any shortfalls ;)

Herrington will be an NT regular within 4 years. Also expect him to join a top 5 league Euro club by then.

Herrington and Circati will be quite the combination.

Heat was part of it. Families not justifying two games in two days may also have something to do with it (Tillies on Friday)

I really rate Herrington on the few occasions I have watched him but don't thing a match-up with Reec is something that would test him. Reec is ungainly which some CB struggle against but I'd like to see Herrington against a better player before I call him a future Socceroo. Any other examples that I can watch?
