Astute observations, G.One thing that interested me is pausing at the split second of a turnover when we are deep in a 541. In previous games i saw we actually saw players sometimes move to open a passing game a split second before we won the ball. This time i sometimes saw everyone stand for 3 seconds and not move. Since 4 V players eventually swarm in the counter press there was nothing they could do
I wonder if the Roo personnel was a bit different in those games where the players off the ball moved more proactively in anticipation?
The Roo team shape appears to be held most of the time and evolving between 3-4-3, 5-2-3 and 5-4-1, and I think the moving between them seems smooth enough, but whereas Ven must lose and sacrifice team shape in their attacking half, sometimes even with 7 players within close proximity of 15- 20 metres around an Aussie on the ball, it i s working very well for Ven.
This 9 mins 20 secs, from 10 mins of the match to 19 mins 20secs, is the worst spell of football by Aus in Popa's tenure.
Also, they've had 3 shots in this period of play. 1 was close and Beach pulled off 2 big saves.
We've played 5 balls into their box, compared to Ven's 4 into ours, but all ours occurred in about the first 8 mins.
We've also had 3 shots - all in this early phase of play too.
From 10 mins to 19 mins, only Beach is playing really well in his keeping role - and- Metcalfe has again done a lot of really good work that is hard to see live.
1 intercept.
9 passes made under time and space pressure, only 1 unsuccessful.
Won 2 out of 3 unique 1v1s.
1 shot on target.
2 superb instances of skill/first touch.
1 ball carry of 15 metre made under pressure.
1 awful unforced error pass meant for Goodwin.
80 % pass completion by Metcalfe in an attacking position, with 6 out of 9 made in the attacking half, and nearly every pass made under pressure, is outstanding.
Mo Toure has won 4 out of 6 unique 1v1 duels - which is also good.
Plus he has made 3 out 3 passes under extreme pressure.
But as for the whole team play, it is like watching Aus play Bangladesh using a Deep Defensive Block, under Arnie, except Ven are doing it to Aus.
Grazor and JS will have noted this too - Ven are sometimes passing the ball in our attacking half 9-10 times, before a pass is attempted to be closed down by a Roo.
In Pressing and Squeezing, a team has to have other players covering opponents near the teammate closing down space to stifle an opponent, otherwise it is easy for them to pass the ball to an unmarked teammate.
There is a lot of work needed on the training ground for effective Full Pressing and intensive Squeezing to work well in games.
