I tend to agree with pjennings on Ryan but I won't judge Izzo over this game, as they say defense wins games incl mids support.
When you struggle camped in own half with just 34% possession - struggle to get ball over the halfway line the usual is gonna give.

There is arguably a better group of players this cycle than last. So the question must be asked of the manager.
Sure, but only marginally better if it is indeed the case.

Can question managers tactics, but we all knew beforehand what type of coach he is/was.

Plays favourites. Xanthi, Perth etc leading to playing group turbulence. Big game misses. 4 GF 4 misses. Arrogance. Took nearly 10 years to admit Hiddink was right to replace him after the yellow he received that should have been a red in Sydney.

Bad man manager, bad tactician, usually bad in big games though has had his share of luck at times. What is there to like.

Don't really see what Izzo could have done with any of the goals but perhaps he was a tad slow off his line for the second. And if you're too slow you're better off staying back and hoping the defence can force the attacker wide.

What had me shouting at my telly was our dreadful passing. The number of times we had opportunities to get forward and passed straight to one of their guys, or straight out, absolutely did my head in. Professional players who can't pass a ball 10 metres FFS...

As for playing Okon over Devlin. FUCK ME DEAD!!!

Couldn't have anything to do with his assistant could it?

I used to care about possession and still prefer to have the ball. But my real concern now is how consistently can we create good scoring opportunities.

This was actually okay v Venezuela. When people said it was a poor game I have some positivity because we still matched them for chances, and decent chances as well.

Today was 2 shots and 1 touch in the box.
USA match was equal chances.
Canada was bad.
Nz away was good.
Nz home was bad.
SA away was bad, despite the win.
Japan was bad.

If he wants to be Mourinho that is fine. But there has to be a path forward to hit teams and consistently threaten. The Venezuela game we had 4 shots on target, in their box 14 times, essentially Arnoldball. One shot on target doesn't get it done even if you are trying to replicate what Arnold did.

The second goal, Izzo should have let the fullbacks deal with it - no way should he have stayed that far out when they were covering the strikers. His input created confusion and allowed them to score.

3rd goal Izzo make a good save. However, there was no hunger for the ball on the part of our defenders, and 3 of their attackers were onto the ball, any of whom could have scored. That phase of play summed up our lack of hunger all game and our inability to make second ball situations count.

Dissapointing second half. Colombia went for the jugular and Australian defence failed to cope. News reports sugest that the entire squad had been beset by unspecified illness in the lead up to the game. That may be, but not sure it should be used an excuse for the second half collapse.

I didn't watch the game, but 3-0 is embarrassing, sure Columbia are a top South American team who finished second in the toughest qualifying confederation in the world ie. Conmebol, but even New Zealand pushed Columbia even though they lost 2-1.

One thing the Socceroos need to get sorted out is their ball retention, and taking of chances, which has been dreadful, and against quality teams like Columbia (who know how to hang on to the ball), if you don't value possession of the ball and don't take your chances, you're going to get your arse handed to you. The Socceroos need to pull their fingers out, or they are going to embarrass themselves in next years World Cup.

I didn't watch the game, but I believe the Socceroo's ball retention was dreadful?, if so, they deserved to cop a hiding.

Here's some stats. Arnold from 2018-2024 has a better win percentage, a better points per game. More goals per game and less conceded than Popovic. Arnold may not have been everyone's cup of tea and there are plenty of better NT managers but he is a better tactical manager, a better man manager and has better results.

All the talk about Aussie DNA was just fodder for the press. He is a very good manager for the level of player we have. He also was meticulous as was Rene scouting the world and the ALM. Something that seems to be missing with the current management.

It is not about picking more players. It is about picking the right players that will add to the group.
