Match stats/analysis for recent Socceroo games

well in that case I'm not sure its really stats doing the job there

making the r16, getting past peru, scoring against france and getting within 1 goal of argentina with probably our weakest side on paper since the mid 80s surely has to get some credit, even if the best quality was defense?
Like I said it’ll be rated as da best but Guus tenure is the highlight still above it that’s my opinion unlike you stat guys.
We went for it back in in 06 that’s what ticks general viewers and us enjoying the game boxs.
Not arnie and poppa ball.
Results matter yep but fark it’s draining and doesn’t make you feel great but what you guys like on paper.
Defense is our only attacking quality for how many years now ????
Feck me when are we going to be better than that ?!

Thanks JS ONeill - great pass of the game.

defense being our best quality is an indictment on our player development rather than the coach though? I guess you reference that by referring to O'Neill....pretty depressing what happened

in my opinion, getting rid of p&r in 93 probably started the decline. The boys born 1981-1984 went through the nsl system and were already a step down from the golden gen

Now from 10 min to 12 min the match pattern is taking shape.

Aus seems to be trying to hold compact shape at all times in Ball Possession Opposition, almost applying only a Partial Press deep in our defensive half.

Then as soon as Aus turns the ball over to regain possession for the Roos, 3 Vens swarm onto a Roo, who promptly turns the ball over in the Transition back to Ven.

Had Toure's shot gone in we may not be having half of these discussions. Perhaps we hold on 1:0 and the view is a pragmatic approach to let the opponent do few dangerous things on the ball.
You are right, JS.

I can’t believe it didn’t go through the keeper?

South Americans are notorious for dropping their heads, despite enormous skill.

I’d like to discuss with Popa his Pressing and Squeezing tactics though.

Also, weirdly Ven have started winning 1v1s, with Mo Toure losing 2 body on body actions, plus Iran and Goodwin being dribbled around successively by one Ven player.

I get Miller is defensively sound but look at his feet when the ball comes to him. Was an exhausting watch the 90 min (game overall) and I spotted a few times where the easiest of takes was fumbled by Miller.

He's definitely a confidence player and even has a bit of acceleration. If a coach can just get him into an attacking greediness then we may see something. His crosses are getting firmer.
Italiano is a better receiver and passer than Miller, but the latter really gets up the opposition’s noses in physical clashes, yet doesn’t seem to get many cards either.

Miller has already caused 2 Turnovers - which is really good. I’m only just starting to get my eye back for them.

For the dual nationals who reject Aus, Miller just loves the Roo shirt! He gives his all!

Conversely, at the 10 mins mark, Ven have played 9 successive passes with no Squeezing pressure (nobody closing them down) in the Aus defensive half.

Pressure was applied on the 10th Ven pass and they turned it over.

Is it the timing of the closing down of space that is important to Popa?
If I vaguely remember Australia started pressing again on 25min. The commentator stated it. That's when we forced one or two turnovers.

Playing defensively is also the coach’s model as well and that’s his tool instructing as such.
Oh so development has improved our defense approach - no bloody wonder we lack expressive AM’s let alone goal scorers hence here we are.
Hope Popa utilises Irakunka and Toure for finally we have a glimmer of hope in the final third after 2 decades - as long as our well developed defense outlook can manage to link with our midfielders retain ball and increase their speed and skill for how are those 2 going to bank some goals.
Yep it is pretty depressing period you got that right :)

I agree with those saying international experience is invaluable but then we see Italiano come in and not look fazed at all. Until we play the reserves we won't know and these friendlies help do that. It's time to play the team that'll be pretty close to the world cup now.

Just reading D’s posting the first 10/15mins like as if we’re super stars is so pre mature and OTT.
Sorry I offend but it’s ridiculous seriously.

JS

Miller has just effected a superb Intercept from good reading of play, but then turned the ball over from an awful trampoline first touch at the 12min 32sec mark.

Very frustrating as Ven were wide open for a counter.

When Goodwin just also just made a good Intercept, his first touch was excellent, whilst still being wrong footed and off balance.

In the split second Goodwin had the ball at his feet, in this Attacking Transition, the supporting off the ball movement from Toure, Iran and Okon Jr was adequate.

Its a pretty good sign if you start well since players tend to get better as they get used to international football

Go back and have a look at it, LFC.

1-10 minutes.

However, from 10 min to 12 mins 32 secs, Ven have dominated.

I report what I see using Football Aus Tech Dept game analysis. Also, used by Clarefontaine and KNVB.

The last 2 and a half mins have not looked pretty for Aus.

For the last 3 mins, there has been no closing down pressure by Aus on Ven.

So deep in our half is staggering.

In the end it seems to be the game plan to only press when there is a trigger regardless of the opposition

Not the funnest way to play.....lets hope it brings results when things matter

Just in another sequence when I think Okon finally rushed at a Ven in our defensive third, the ball was Turned over to Goodwin heading under pressure, clearing speculatively, with Toure winning a 1v1 heading duel, completing a pass, but Iran didn’t anticipate the nod on, like his Ven opponent who anticipated and beat Iran for pace.

Iran didn’t support the ball carrier , Toure, adequately in this action in an Attacking Transition.

Again like the Miller fumble, Ven were wide open at the back having committed so many players into the Aus half.

Must thank Kitwally, and others, for posing good questions I didn’t have detailed data to respond to.

The new focus on passing accumulation is providing a broader picture.

The central midfield is just plain wrong. We need players- that we have - that will go looking for the ball and mix it up so we are not always looking to play wide. Teague went missing when he played. Okon jnr and oneill do it as well. We need cm that demand the ball and can play forward. These tactics are woeful. And they will not win anything. We will get schooled by the better teams and will just lump it forward and expect Irankunda or You're to do the rest. Or Bos to produce some magic.

At this stage, if we don't get a dream draw I can't see us making the top 32. Sad really because with the right players picked the potential is there to go at least as well if not better than 2022.

I know people will say popa sees what is going on in camp. But I think popa is the problem. Unless he picks his best side (which he can't because of injury and non selection in the squad) and wins well during next week I have grave fears for the World Cup and the subsequent popularity of the NT. He is doing irreparable damage to 'the brand' and is only being lauded by a very friendly media.

I can't imagine such group think by the media in serious football nations.

Given irankundas speed and our sluggishness transitioning from our 541 shape to our 343 shape, irankundas runs are vital so it was a real issue when thry were poor

After watching teams in the top FIFA teen rankings, like Japan, Mexico and USA, I think they are a class above us.

We have just had a horrible result, and probably an awful performance apart from the first 10 mins and last 15 mins, but Aus has had recent success against some quality teams.

Our depth is increasing too.

Our depth was increased under Arnold in a more orderly manner, though too many were retained for too long. Now we are picking players with a view to the Asian Cup. This is the main game. Not time to blood journeymen and kids that have bugger all professional game time. If you are a good enough you are old enough. But you need to be playing real football and proving it - not just hoping youth football is enough. You're, Bos and Irankunda have shown they are good enough. But when the people we pick in the central midfield don't demand the ball with the exception of Irvine and Balard I question the mentality of the selections. It's like throwing spaghetti against the wall and seeing what sticks. Okon, oneiill Teague and to some extent Brattan and caceres all have gone missing when needed. Is this by design?. Is this really how he wants to play.

I'm all for more depth but you need a plan that will win games that are measurably better than us and playing the way we are we will get thrashed by the better teams and be lucky to score against the lesser ones. We sit too deep, rely on the wings and our cm go missing.
