Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

Do we go against the wind in the 1st half or do we want it? Looks like its going to be worse than Olympic game.
I had an old Yugo coach in juniors who insisted, if we win the toss, always kick against the wind first half.... if it dies out second half that's just bad luck but if it doesn't, they will be tired late in the game AND kicking against the wind, not us.

If we struggle to come to grips with either the opponent or the conditions the "break glass emergency" tactic as lachie flannagan calls it will come into play. I expect us to put a lot of balls in the box and test Moretons defence.

The difference in the Esteban era was that playing for the long throw was a plan A tactic. We would just pump long balls forward from back to front and try force set piece opportunities. Now we are trying to play football but the tactic will be used when available.

Its important though that we dont overcommit numbers in the box, Olympic almost csught us on counters a few times, we need protection behind the ball.

Absolutely right.. Olympic did play a crazy formation at time sin the first half though... 5 up top at one stage.

Part of the appeal of this tournament for me is the unknown "style" of each federation.. Moreton will be challenge but one , I hope, we can overcome comfortably...

That's a good point.

Now the long throw is no longer the only weapon we have to dismantle teams. It is just one of the weapons that Sinisa will now use. Just a sign of having a better squad who can can actually play attacking football.

Firstly, well dont to all for the turnout again.. given the factors we should be more than happy!

Secondly, well done to the lads, its always frustrating against sides that have no intention to play (Moreton was infuriating and ref lost it allowing so many needless stoppages without punishment). Only 1 side in it though as we all witnessed and we shouldve buried the game early but again some nerves from a team still trying to gel, wrong decisions and another brain freeze moment (yes it was soft) but shouldnt have happened from Bonada, what was the thinking?. Now we change it all up heading for the NSW double and come back with the points. Saw Brdmdw today vs an atrocious Olympic and they will be very similar to Morton in style and execution.

All in all thats 2 from 2 , Aguek proved more solid at front again for me and i think we start to consider him as the starter, Uchida and Pasquali were again great, Andrews better but continues to make silly mistakes at times, perhaps we get to see another one of the signings now Bonada will miss the games.

Will say one thing on the crowd, its good to see how young the crowd demographic was again.

Just so weird going to Heidelberg last week and seeing over half the crowd being in the 65+ age bracket compared to our 2 home games. I think our elderly nsl contingent wont travel to lakeside anymore (many are still alive) but we are proving to be a hit with the younger generations.

That makes sense as to why WE get blamed for absolutely everything that is shambles over there... its bc of their dementia, and their cataracts account for the supporter numbers they seeing but rest of us cant seem to find!

Before the game I saw the youngest person ever hold a flare in Clarendon Street. He must have been 7 years old!

My ‘North Macedonian’ work colleague, who had never been to a Lakeside match, made a couple of funny quips.

‘They start them young at Hellas I see’

‘And they try to blame Preston fan’s for crowd trouble’

I do agree bout the older generation not coming to lakeside as much which is a bit of a shame... I had trouble convincing my old man and my uncle, this time around, they find the village easier due to proximity, parking etc.. with large crowd at lakeside they either have to be there super early to park in main carpark and still walk a bit or if you late and you end up clarendon street way its too much of a walk for them which is what happened against Olympic..i did see a massive difference in their participation though which made me happy, against Olympic they were as vocal as the good old days, at village bc they only there to watch the football they dont engage beyond the game itself at best.

Just an interesting personal experience i thought id share!

I think proximity is the main thing, the elderly see going to Lakeside as daunting, potentially fighting city traffic depending which way they're coming in from. Our middle aged demographic dont seem to bring the fathers.

Bergers elderly likely live in the Darebin area or its fringes. Super loyal i remember most of those old farts from like the early 90s, but its a depressing environment.

I saw the Greek dancing that sydney olympic had pre game today and i just dont see that sort of thing resonating with our crowd demographic.

Im all for cultural expression and think it has its place at our clubs, but i agree and dont think thats the way to do it either, fornus anyway, I really enjoyed our setup and the idea of differing greek food trucks and others, loved the coffee stand, ice cream truck is always a real hit it seems, more stalls at big games perhaps, but especially merch (expand the array and simple things like those damn keynrings so many ppl keep asking for finally done) bc when done correctly the internal fan atmosphere does more for the club than any external factor... i think given our demographic what could be done correctly is some junior setups on the back end penalty comp for prize (was done well at matildas once for a tournament..super successful and they charged gold coin $2 entry). All it costs the club is a prize (tee for finalists)

That’s a great observation. It’s just so pleasing to see a lot of kids aged 16-20 years old wearing South gear and getting into the matches. Hope it continues.
